Prospeed > OEM Expedition Rack

As per title...looking at buying a Expedition Rack for our D4 to carry all our camping equipment including Oz Tent RV5.

What's the pro's & con's of the Prospeed Rack against the OEM one? My presence is the Prospeed one, but wondered if there was any features that were more useful on the OEM.

Very happy with my prospeed rack and sliders and would reccomend them

The rack is very quiet, very flexible as far as fitting options go. I made up some Thule rails to fit it so can use all their bits as well

I'm in the same boat - looking for an expedition rack as we'll soon have a car full (2 yr old, twins on the way and back two seats out of action due to a full size Barjo cage for our two dogs... the only option we have is to go on the roof).

For me it's a balance between aesthetics and practicality - the Prospeed one obviously wins with its aesthetics but currently the FR Slimline II looks to be the most practical.

Anyone with a Prospeed comment on how it is day to day for general strapping things down - I presume for most things you'll need the flooring? Is there still a lip around the edge with the flooring installed?

The only thing putting me off the Front Runner is comments regarding wind noise above certain speeds - the rack will be staying on all the time so need to factor this in.

I have the earlier version with the mesh floor. Which is strong enough for me to walk on.

I have added a rasied floor section spanning 2 rails for when I need to be on the roof a lot (amateur radio with big aerials and a mast). I have brough 4 rails in total and use the thule stuff for kayaks and bikes. In general it is very flexible althogh tha might not all apply to the newer version.

I use the thule bars for the roof box as well which makes fitting it quick

It is super quiet compared to the frontrunner that I have on the defender.

I have the mk2 prospeed rack with plastic flooring.

I've stood on the flooring and takes my 16st weight allthough it does flex a bit. Carried loads of stuff up there: garden fencing, Christmas trees, mattresses, cases etc etc.

I purchased a stack of M8 loop bolts off eBay as they are considerably cheaper than from prospeed and use these as anchor points for strapping stuff on.

As already said, the racks are very quiet, look great on the Disco and have no noticeable impact on mpg ....i've averaged 28+ mpg with them on Thumbs Up

As above, its hard to fault the Prospeed rack, but you do need to add the accessories required for your use. Flooring is a must for general usage. I have the two back sections in, and leave the section above the front sunroof open so i can still use it.

I actually use mine more than i thought i would. Been doing lots of work at home, so its been really useful.

I had a Patriot rack on my 90 Defender and it was equally as useful, but it was noisy at speed. The main difference is that the floor feels a lot more sturdy with the Patriot compared to the Prospeed, and i imagine its the same situation with FR Vs Prospeed, however the Proposed floor still seems fine to walk on, but just flexes a bit. The upside with the Prospeed floor system is its removable, and you can leave different sections in/out depending on the circumstances.

I guess negatives for the prospeed are cost, and the ladder coating doesn't seem to last very well - Maybe the Raptor would be better than the normal powder coated version for this?

Iguana - I see you have a Raptor/Line-X Ladder. Did you get it like that, or have it refinished? If so, who coated it for you. Looking to get mine sorted, as the ladder powder coating is getting tatty.

There is another option.
Perfectly flat front to rear and side to side, the slates run front to back and it's whisper quiet, all rails are slotted and except a standard m8 bolt so attaching stuff is really easy.

Owned OEM, Frontrunner & now on my 2nd Prospeed. Awesome bit of kit & don't notice it's there.
OEM flimsy & noisy, 75kg capacity, around -5mpg
Frontrunner nice flat load bed, noisy, rated 300kg (newer version), around -3mpg
(Also Patriot & Big Country, both a similar style with slats running along the length).
There's also the new Cargo Bear option available from site sponsor Leeds (Brendan) @ 4x4 Overlander.

I've had my FR on my Disco for over 2 years now, yes it is noisy compared to not having a rack however it isn't hugely distracting...at least not after the first few days. Just turn the radio up one more click.

It is hugely versatile. I love the look of the Prospeed but to make it truly practical you need to buy the flooring which then bumps up the price. The FR is ready to go with no faff. It's hugely strong and works straight out of the box.

My only regret is that I have the original one and not the slimline with the fancy slot through the outer perimeter for the gadgets to slot in to. Just means I have to drill holes to attach them to mine.

As for MPG, I run GG AT's and my rack with on motorway runs and a small bit of pootling about haven been getting 400-430 miles to a tank. Which I think isn't too shabby. Still not as much as I'd like though Laughing

I've been using a Hannibal rack for 10+years. Its really quiet and flat. It makes loading a doddle and easily carries my weight (90kg) when I stand on it to load up or tie things on. I highly recommend it.

Mine is a Patriot rack, very similar to the rack of Mr Moo as its flat and easy to load things on particularly my roof tent Thumbs Up
