Q - Special Programmes [Ice]

This morning it was -6o and was travelling icy minor and B roads then A roads.
So had Special Programmes set to Snow Ice Gravel etc.
Was fine in the slower stuff.
Could feel the accelerator pedal was more 'wooden' than normal and understand that for take off's it will apply a lower gear [it's an Auto].
But on A roads travelling at around 55 - 60mph it got me thinking.

1] Is there a max speed limit to drive with Special Programmes engaged?
2] Does the 'special programme - ice' actually do anything extra over the standard set up at speeds around 50mph +
2a] if so - what?

If your travelling in icy conditions at 50-60 mph then 'terrain response' is unlikely to help you. When there is no traction ....there is no traction Wink

I was lead to understand that TR Ice / Gravel / Snow etc also adjusts the ABS settings slightly.

The ABS settings to allow a small build up of snow infront of the tyre to actually aid stopping. (bit like a scandinavian flick, works by getting the sidewalls to do the same thing) I'm sure this was either on a DVD / Video or via training at LR Eastnor.

I could of course be talking absolute tosh Laughing

And should have said - Agree with DG. Ice no grip = no grip. Snow - different story Thumbs Up

TR mode is actually Grass, Gravel or Snow - not Ice Snow and Gravel - this changes several points in the engine management, auto gearbox and diff or diffs.
The throttle response is reduced to aid the driver being smooth with the accelerator - no big throttle inputs required.
The auto gearbox will select a higher gear to start off in, usually second high or third low - not a lower gear - to reduce the likelyhood of inducing wheelspin. It will also change up a gear sooner than normal mode and down later - hanging a higher gear with less revs.
DSC response is more rapid, the diff or diffs if you have a rear e-diff are preloaded to a point to react quicker.
The TR mode can be used in high or low ratio, drive or command shift option for as long as conditions persist with no adverse effect.
Remember although we enjoy the benifits of 4WD to spread the load and get moving in low traction situations, it still takes a lot to stop 2.7 tons with low friction.
There is no electronic mode for ice only the one that says "I want to go home to my wife and family in one piece."

TR modes General, Grass Gravel and Snow, Mud and Ruts, and Sand are available through the entire operating range of a D3, Rock Crawl is obviously limited. It is purely up to the driver as to what speed, for the conditions they find themselves in, is appropriate.

Hi ronp,
Having read your earlier posts can I assume that you still have the MTR's on? How do they perform on icy roads compared to "normal" road tyres?
I'm in the market for a set of new boots and I'm seriously tempted by the MTR's, in saying that they have to be fit to use all year (50% A roads, 30% motorway, 20% mud/fields)
Thanks for any feedback!
Martin

No, not got my MTR's back on yet!
Just waiting on a nice warm sunny day to do it Wink

MTR's are a great tyre, but you need to get used to the road noise esp on Motorways.
I will live with the noise for a few months when I change them over.
But I find them no where near as noisy as STT's.

TR Mode Grass Gravel and Snow

I went on a land Rover day 2 weeks ago, and the first thing they did was head off across a wet grass field with this mode selected, we were doing around 50 mph with the instructors foot flat on the accelerator.

He then did his party piece of violently throwing the car left and right still with his foot hard on the accelerator. The Discovery reacted by bring everything back under control and you could feel the car applying the brakes to each wheel in turn to get it back on the straight and narrow. Very impressive!javascript:emoticon('Bow down')

Now on the road, we'd be all dead because we would have hit something else javascript:emoticon('Shocked')

But it does prove it works at all speeds and i would prefer to use it, than not!

does that help?

That'll be the stability control kicking in - not the Terrain Response setting Wink

GGS should retard the throttle at any speed, so should Mud and Ruts (a slight retardation / not like GGS).

Try it on the road (non icy please Whistle ) at around 50/60. Just twist the dial and then feel the throttle go all unresponsive (compared to normal).

?

I'm not old or confused (well maybe), but he selected the TR and explained it was this that helped, he even had his foot flat on the accelerator when we stopped.

Either way it worked.javascript:emoticon('Question')

GGS would have retarded the throttle and set the E-Diffs to react more quickly. DSC would have reigned in the D3 during the hard steering though. GGS would have helped as his foot was down all the time, the throttle input would have been far less than if GGS was off.

And yep... either way it is impressive Thumbs Up
