I went to a Loacal DVLA office, you take with you Log Book, V750, MOT if it has one, but NOT your Tax disc. They do it all over the counter, they Stamp your MOT certificate with the new reg, and it takes approx 2 weeks for new log book, once home or in the car park you can put on the new plate, the old tax disc needs to go back in the envelope they give you. The Local office will give you a new disc before you leave.
Hope that helps. If you do it by post then there is a grey area about using the car once they change the details but before you receive them in the post, NOT ADVISED as a friend got arresseted doing this as the insurance covered the old plate but the PNC did'nt recognise this, 6 points

DVLA office in Edinburgh only deal with trade punters to completion. Average Joe goes along, they take your paperwork and send out the documents in around 10 working days. Always mobbed out and always a good selection of pikeys loitering around.

On the three occasions I have done a transfer, I have rang the Insurance Company from the DVLA office as I got my paperwork back and told them before I drive it away - also on each occasion I have had the new set of plates IN THE CAR and ready to slap on when I get out of the DVLA building. As squeaky clean as you can make it.Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Did exactly the same, when bougt a car didn't bother with the stealer screwing up the transfer, got a 2nd set of plates with the to be transfered reg on them & changed in the carpark. Then phoned Ins Co whilst enjoying a Starbuckies.
