I put a 2.5 NAD Defender in deep water years ago on that driver trg area. One knackered engine later caused by hydrostatic lock. Shocked Didn't get a bill though!

Ah, the old armoured bread van. Had the off road prowess of a Mini Metro on slicks!

That was basically the end of my days in the infantry - what a horrible experience.

Rather walk into battle..

Tanglewood, don't dis the Metro! I've taken a 1.0 litre Metro on many green lanes! They're alright if you keep some speed up! Whistle

My general experience of "highly decorated senior officers" during my army career trekking (on foot and vehicle bound) across the plain was that, unless there was an NCO nearby, they were largely clueless as to their exact location Cool[/quote]

My sentiments exactly Wink
I met a troop of armoured vehicles looking for a location and appeared to be lost so offered help.
The troopy named the location they were looking for but before I could answer, he said "I have a 6 figure grid reference but I suppose that isn't any good to you as a civvy"
I had been a Civvy for the grand period of three months !!!
As he was only two grid squares out I felt sorry for him, so gave him directions so that they could harbour up before dark Sad

I'd have been tempted to send him off in the wrong direction. Maybe it's just me, but I thought the ability to read an O/S map and find things based on reference numbers is quite common.

A certain poster said that one of the persons taking part was a 'Highly decorated senior officer' and would have known of any illegal activity.

Ditto.. they used to pair newby/young officers up with me to make sure they came back from Brecon alive.... though sometimes not unscathed....

Officers lead... NCO's hang back and snigger.... Rolling with laughter

A mate of mine manged to do a 360 in a defender there too many years ago. Apparently he took great delight to calling in on the radio "I've rolled the Rover over, over"

Quoting the Lt Colonel in charge directly:

"Off duty military personnel are members of the public when off duty and have no more right of access to SPTA than anyone else"

Guess that must include our "highly decorated senior officer"
