How quickly does oil discolour

Just wondered, 'cos I checked my oil after service yesterday and looked quite dark, not amber like in the bottle. Probably done 50 miles since service

A diesel engine will turn its oil black fairly quickly, due to the carbon carry-over.

During my first service I was convinced that they hadn't changed the oil as it looked 'used' when I got it home after a 10km drive, but from what I can tell it's normal.... Thumbs Up

Just had my 45K mile service and had the same thing, checking that they had not over/under filled it I noticed the oil was already dark. But this was the third time this has happened so did not worry about it. Lease car so I have to take it on trust that they are doing the work as I never even see the bill/worksheet.

I wish I could see what colour my oil is!

All I know is that there is some in there coz the car says so!

Had this too. Just checked oil after driving home from garage (15km) and oil already black. Didnt trust the garage but they double checked and assured me that it had been changed. will invest in oil change pump kit and do it myself when warranty runs out.

Always the same on all diesels I've ever had.
Trouble is, when the oil is drained out, there's always some left behind in the oil cooler and pipework etc. which immediately mixes with the new stuff, the carbon build-up in the oil is a pretty dense pigment (try getting splashes off your hands or clothes!) so it doesn't need much carry-over.

How quickly does it discolour? If it's doing it's job then it's colouring up within seconds the first time the engine is started.
