Rain repellent?

Has anyone experience of rain repellents used to help to keep windscreen clear. If so, how effective are they and how often do they need to be applied?

Brilliant for a short while, then the wipers clear it off. I use it on light plane screens, but then there are no wipers and no diesel from trucks, so it lasts longer.

I used to use it on my mirrors years ago. It works better on side & rear windows.

On my other car I find Rain-X is brilliant just after it's been applied but, as said earlier, it does loose it's effectiveness after a few days. I always apply it the evening before a long run if rain is forecast and the heavier the rain the more effective it is - it doesnt like fine spray.

To work well however it needs a reasonable air flow, 20MPH or so, over the screen and I found it did not work well on my D2 - I think this was because the flat front of the radiator grill throws a 'bow-wave' of air that only hit the top half of the screen. Give the D3 is a similar shape I've not yet tried it.

A freind of mine drew a smiley face on my back windscreen using the same cloth he had used to put the rainex on with. Every time the screen steamed up, there was this face smiling back at me in the rear view mirror. It was still there 6 years later when I sold the vehicle. The friend's been warned to keep away from my Disco.

Keeps the side windows clear, but as BN said, the wipers do wipe it off. I always use it. Used to use it on the visor of my motorcycle helmets (it was brilliant at shedding the water) until it was found that the liquid removed the scratch resistant coating. I would not use it on anything other than glass, ie keep it away from your headlights!!

I may have made this up completely, but I'm sure there was a Rain X-type additive that you added to your washer fluid. It was supposed to top-up the window treatment. Really stank if I remember, pinkish in colour and really thick. It did work and prolonged the effective use of the window treatment. Worked best at 50 mph+ and then you could do away with the wipers pretty much altogether.

I think it also reduced misting on bathroom mirrors - more than you need to know.
