Rear Diff Lock

My question is very simple: How do I know if I have it?

The 4x4 info shows two locks, normally green. I remember selecting rock crawl once and the center diff turned red, but the rear never changed from green..

So how do I know if it's there? Do I have to get my disco really muddy to find out?

Sounds very much like you don't have it, if fitted rear is as active (if not more active) than the centre diff

I only noticed this standing still, not much time to look at 4x4 info when driving. Could it be that the rear lock is not permanently engaged and blinks red when needed?

you should finds that the rear diff lock light will light up before the centre diff light.

If you have a rear diff fitting (and its working properly) put TA into rockcrawl and low ratio. after a couple of seconds both the centre and rear diff lock symbols will turn red. if they dont, then you proberly havnt got a rear diff lock fitted.

if you put the car into off road suspension you can look over the rear wheels and see if the rear diff lock is fitted. Duncan

Cross axle the vehicle and see if it moves without the traction control kicking in!

The rear diff on mine seems to lock as it is needed and possibly in anticipation of a loss of traction.

I think the software is more sophisticated than just locking as a certain condition is met. I've noticed it locking before the engine speed picks up if there was a recent history of loss of traction and I suspect that above a set speed it will not lock if there is a steering input.

Another thing thing I noticed is that it sometimes locks when stationery when the EPB is applied and Snow, mud, grass application is selected.

Don't forget they're 'active' diffs, they lock progressively as required, not just locked/unlocked, so the 4x4 info screen (if fitted) is just showing that they're active not that they're fully locked The End
