Rear discs and pads

Car is in for its 42k service (main dealer) with a slight squeal on the rear brakes.
Phoned up to check on progress ..........

Rear discs need replacing £260
Rear pads “totally” worn down, although not a flicker from the wear indicator warning ... £230

So £500 for rear discs and pad???? Really??

Also tried to flog me new tyres (20” scorpions) for £230 each Laughing

Main dealers seem to think if you can afford to buy a LR you can afford to pay their inflated prices for maintaining them!!

You would think with all the information available to DIY these days and access to local independent garages who are usually cheaper and better, their prices would be more competitive.

Time to get the spanners out!
I use Ferodo pads at around £32 for the rear.
I’d be checking the disc thickness before replacing them.
I normally get around 30k out of a set of rear pads and 60k out of the discs.
You would be surprised at how many main dealers recommend disc replacement before they are half worn.
 D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.
D3 2005 HSE, Bonatti Grey, now sold but still comes back for servicing.
Defender 2002 Td5 Commercial, had a hard life but slowly being restored.
I only work so I can afford to repair my Land Rovers!

update!!!!!!

the garage have sent me a video of the items of concern......with a price list.

number plate bulb out £20
new wipers £70!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they have pointed that "part of the rear bumper is missing"....... (towing socket cover)
and have now recommended that five tyres need replacing, including the NSR TWICE @£236 each

So to name and shame, this is Inchcape LR in Chester.

As has been pointed out, do they think that because the cars we choose are stablemates with £100k Range Rovers that they think they can rinse us dry!!!

You probably want to buy that bulb somewhere else..... changing one is a 1 minute job or so. I got some known brand (Osram, Phillips, ...) for 0.49 eur last time at the local supermarket.

Most likely the dealer isn’t competitive with the tires either, I’d shop around. I’m sure there are places in U.K. that are specialized in just tires and those tend to have pretty good deals. Or buy what you want on the Internet, have someone local to you fit.

If you need or want the cover - it’s DPO500011PCL. You can probably get it from a breaker really cheap, perhaps the parts forum here could also help you. Seems to be 25-30 GBP for a genuine new.

Wipers - pretty sure you can get a set of Bosch aerotwins front and back for half the price or less. No-name ones even cheaper and they’re just as good mostly.

To me its the principal......

charging £20 for a £1 bulb and a 5min fix equates to £228 per hour labour.

similarly, £70 for £23 wipers and a 10 min fix equates to £282 per hour labour.

its just a rip off.

ALSO what is a concern is the brake pad wear sensors seem to have completely failed.
This service should have been carried out 6 weeks, and 3000 miles ago but was cancelled by the dealer as no loan cars were available (despite the service being booked in early november). Now if the discs have been damaged as a result of the above two issues then I think I have a case that the damage could have been prevented given working sensors and a timely service.
