Rear Prop Shart Bearing.

Hi,
So the MOT has thrown an advisory about the rear prop shaft bearing and it needs replacing. The £250 question is can I swap the bearing out this weekend ready for an event at the end of the month and then do the complete shaft in late sept/oct? The cost isn't an issue, its the work involved. Can the bearing be swapped without the complete shaft coming off???
I have the gear but no idea, Ramps, 3Ton stands, 3Ton jack and more tools that SWMBO needs to know about...
MY 06 HSE 2.7TDV6 with 153K on the clock.

TIA...

When I replaced mine at 147K, although initially diagnosed with a shot centre bearing, the rear UJ was also shot & seizing up.

Complete shaft removal required to fit a new centre bearing. Its a bit fiddly to do and you have to get it right first time! New bearing costs around £40, if money no option a new shaft can be fitted in around an hour or so.

To be honest i’ll Bet of you took the old shaft off the hardy spicer thing at the back would be “notchy” and knackered. New one from Bearmach was about £200. Don’t forget to replace the bolts to the rear diff also. I believe that land rover used to quote 250nm for those bolts but now have dropped it to 150nm. Thumbs Up

New prop delivered and fitted in a morning. Just checking the torque setting and then replacing the heat shield job done on driveway with stands and jack. Needed jack to crack the prop from the diff end a sit was uber tight and didn't want to move...

Just changed the Centre bearing on mine.

Biggest pain was re-sealing the centre CV joint boot again afterwards!!

oh and crushing my thumb between propshaft and chassis cross member whilst lifting prop in place!!!
Embarassed

Now got front wheel bearings to change as something is clicking, LHS rumbling and brake discs shot!!
Big Cry

I avoided the crushing of digits by setting the prop on two stands and thus leaving me two hands to reach for the bolts and align the shaft... Worked well for me.

Just about to change my centre bearing. What grease did you use in the CV joint? The workshop manual does not tell you anything, it says replace the whole propshaft.

Then you're all set! The tricky bit is resealing the alumimium cover but its not rocket science. Rolling Eyes Just go easy when removing it. Take your time, and a small ball pein hammer a few cloths will prove invaluable. Thumbs Up
