Rear wheel bearing done

I spent Friday evening and Saturday morning doing a rear wheel bearing.

The most trouble I had, was getting the EPB cable out of the back plate.

Re-assembly-

Bearing was dry. Looks like the grease had left via the inboard seal, on the CV side.

Cutting the inner race off the hub.

Hi mate ,What were the symptoms of the bearing going ? On my disco 55 tdv6 now I've got a strange thumping noise coming from drivers side rear. When I'm turning left you can feel and hear a thumping just under the rear seat Confused It goes quicker with speed Rolling Eyes Cheers

I was aware that there was some movement in the hub for a while. My MOT man noticed it this MOT, and put an advise on.
I did begin to notice noises though. It sounded like a transmission whine, and sometimes a deep rumbling noise. Both speed related.

Since doing it, the car it transformed. No whining, no rumbling, and generally really quiet over bumps.

Yours sounds more like a CV, or differential issue?

thommo - did you find out what this was? I have a similar noise every now and again - like someone rapidly thumping their feet on the floor behind my driver's seat for a very short time and then goes as I accelerate. Sounded a bit like how you described yours...

Hi Cosmic ,It was my rear drivers side tyre ,My front lower arms were shot and when I had them replaced I asked the garage to investigate the noise. The tyre was worn on the inside due to the arms ,I wasn’t convinced it was that simple. But it was.

Hope this helps mate Thumbs Up

Thanks for the quick reply mate. I'll have to have a look over the obvious next weekend and then wait for it to get worse I think! Could be a number of things looking through the forum - just hoping something easy and not too expensive - yeah right! Rolling with laughter

@cosmic329 Yours sounds like the center bearing on the prop shaft has failed.

Flack Thumbs Up

Thanks Flack Thumbs Up - that's high up my suspect list too after reading the forum. Will have to look at the weekend.
I also have a wheel bearing on the way out as it is rumbling and whining at about 40 mph (had one done earlier this year and it sounds the same). Was hoping it was connected but think not. Going to put my warranty to the test again soon then!
