rear winch

Has anyone fitted or used one of these

as a rear winch?

I know it's lower rated than needed for standard duties, but with a pulley it would extricate from small ditch/shallow mud ok, and it's easier than setting up a front winch to winch backwards!

A rear winch on a demountable towbar was always an option I considered for emergency/occassional use but I doubt that one in your link would pull the skin off custard though, certainly won't pull a D3/4 and would be dangerous to try IMHO

If you had enough pulies on it should do it. You're just changing the gearing.

General guide is that the winch should be at least 1.5 times the rated weight of the item it's pulling. A D4 is around 5500lbs unladen so roughly speaking your winch needs to be 8250lbs minimum.

So a 3500lb winch - not a chance, pulleys or not.

know about the 1.5x - but it's a matter of pulleys to get the right load, if you really want: could move a Disco with a hand line, if you have enough pulleys and can reduce the friction enough.....

I agree it's bit light, but for light duties it might just get one out of a hole - literally.
