nah handbrakes away and Disco3aholic (better than tv) and for a country which relies on it's ore deposits and fossil fuel I think he'd soon get a spanking. A bit more relaxed over here (due to more space probably) not as many nutters...yet!

Slimer nice part of the country but like you said you'd need some time to see some of the IMO nicer stuff, just dont come in the summer unless your a sadist. August to November is best.

they are parrots... just repeat what they've read and heard at greenpiss.org

The media are at fault too. This is not a 4x4 tax but a high emissions vehicle tax. So why don't the headlines read..

Porsche and Ferrari owners to be taxed !

Red Ken to tax non Londoners driving into their own capitol - again

All 4x4's to be highly taxed coming from outside the zone

Of course if you live in London you'll get a residents discount so it won't be such an issue. For those who's public transport options are zero - again we will have to stump up to help balance Ken's communist "your not allowed a lifestyle sonny", lifestyle.

Check out this post by 'Robert', a bit below DGs'

This uninformed vendetta against 4 x 4s is ridiculous

I currently drive a 7 seater 2 wheel drive Mercedes E class estate which seems to annoy no-one.

I am considering replacing it with a 7 seater Land Rover Discovery. The Discovery footprint is much the same as the Mercedes, Discovery slightly shorter and slightly wider. The Discovery is more economical than my current car. I need the seats, e.g. tomorrow all will be used for family / friends.

So, comparison slightly in Discovery favour, so why no vendetta against my Mercedes? Politics of envy I suspect.

Standard of driving by 4 x4 drivers worse than average? I don’t think so. If you want to see dreadful driving go past a school as I do every morning and witness a lot of dreadful driving from people piloting all manner of vehicles from worn out ancient Escorts to brand new £70k Range Rovers. Solution is driver education and enforcement not trying to ban 4 x 4s .

What will probably swing it in the Discovery’s favour is the number of speed bumps and miles of appallingly maintained roads that I traverse daily. I am preparing to be public enemy number one!

Good post... a little more measured than I can muster.

I think I'll pop over there now and raise a toast to that post.

wanted to post this, but need someone to check it over (my english ain't so good)

To those who believe that 4x4 takes up more road space thereby causing congestion in narrow streets and at junctions… No, they don’t, they might be taller, but they certainly don’t take up more space on the road then any other family car out there. Any child who goes to school can tell those people that the area a vehicle occupies on the road is the width x length. Height has nothing to do with it.

To those who believe that driving a 4x4 is status symbol, a choice rather then necessity, thus should be punished. Then one would ask why such choices exist. I am sure North Korea’s approach of choiceless society would solve the problem. Oh yes, I forgot, it is communism at its purist.

To those who believe drivers of 4x4 are all uncapable drivers and unconsiderate people, is like treating all British as football holigans. Haven’t we learned from the recent war, get the facts straight first and do not assume. Driver who can not negotiate a smartcar or any vehicle shouldn’t be on the road in the first place. And there are plenty of them out there driving all types of car including 4x4’s, so it has nothing to do with 4x4s.

A distinction has to be made in terms of what we are talking about here, if we are talking about cars which has driver sit higher up, then we need to include all the people carriers. If we are talking about 4 wheel drive cars, then all 4 wheel drive cars should be included including little fiat panda 4x4. If off roaders is what we talking about here, then we should use the correct term of off roaders. If it is the safty of pedestrain we are talking about, then we should include all London taxi’s since their bonnet height is if not higher then some off roaders. And finally, if it’s the shape of the car which looks like a off roaders, then we need to include all 2 wheel drive car which looks like a off roaders.

Now talking about enviroment, we do need to think about ways to reduce emmisions. For example, better public transport network. But singling out 4x4 without understanding what 4x4 is is not only unwise but unjust and not scientific.

cheers
