A reliable discovery, is there such a thing?

It appears so. Especially in my case.

I’ve had my D3 for about 4.5 years and it’s been great. Couple of run of the mill issues that have been easily sorted. I had my original crack free oil pump and belts changed last week (12 months overdue) and just done 420 miles up to Inverness with the wobbly box on the back. 164k now and she’s still doing me proud. Been thinking of selling it next year but will have to give it serious thought now!

No issues on my V8 for three years. Yeah, I had a broken battery but that could happen with any vehicle. Trouble-free otherwise.

The site warden at Rosemarkie Inverness rang me 25 minutes before we got here to make sure we were still on our way and hadn’t broke down......I did comment with “how did you know I drive a discovery?” Haha

Had the beast for 13 years. 75000 miles. Have had problems but it has never Actually broken down as in “it just stopped and wouldn’t go” leaving me stranded! Biggest problem it gives me is the bongs and when the dash lights up like a Christmas tree. Have never had a car for 13 years so it must be doing something right.

425 ish miles home and it did it no problem, could have kept going. Used 1 and a quarter tank of derv at a registered 21mpg (20 if you work it out properly). I do love it. But long distance is beginning to hurt my back in this machine 😢

So raises the question, why do some live virtually forever and some die far too early? I don’t accept the line that with lots of love and care they will march on, mine didn’t and lacked for nothing, whilst some are neglected to a criminal degree and go on and on and on. To me it’s a total lottery.

Could be rust, too, I imagine.

Gearbox certainly, replacement cost (with new, not recon) is high.

The stuff in and around the engine are the most expensive parts, so...

A big factor with these engine is starting, it takes a couple of seconds to get good oil pressure.
An engine thats done a lot of long journeys will last longer than one thats done a lot of stop start ones.

I wonder if you can fit an oil acumulator to boost pressure when starting, i have seen this done on other vehicles

For my money, its down to fuel.

I'm a transport manager with a fleet of around 60 vans and a dozen HGV's

Supermarket fuels kill engines. Some being worse than others but I won't allow Tesco fuel in any of my fleet.
Supermarket fuel causes more injector faults. Injector faults cause premature engine failures.

I did keep statistics for a while going back years. Cheap fuel causes problems.
