X3 with the 6 cylinder diesel would be a nice drive and a more manageable size. The SO has a 20d X3 and is very happy with her.

X3 looks pretty good apart from runflats; also like the Macan now someone has suggested it.

How about a Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV):-

worth a test drive, for, I would suggest at least half a day.

Um, maybe an idea, I'm interested generally in EVs. Ugly as hell though....

The new x1 is nice enough as well. Much improved. The 2.2l tractor engine in the DS was replaced with a 2.0l engine. Same one as the evoque. Test drive them all, you will probably drive home in a D4 Laughing

My company car is outlander phev

It's okay but mileage is rubbish and small petrol tank means filling up lots on long journeys

I bought the XC60 D5 for my ex the other week - very impressed

Hyundai Santa Fe? I've been driving one on a regular basis in the US and I must say I'm impressed. Its good to drive, has lots of room, good boot, occasional 7 seats and well made. It also comes with a 5 year warranty. Thumbs Up

Got to the same stage as others - love the D3, it was a brilliant family car, carried us all (and all the kids friends, dogs when they arrived) all over the UK and down to the alps. But kids left home, dogs too ( Sad ) so need less capability.
However now at 155,955 and starting to cost where repeairs occur at too frequent rate.
Having a look at XC60 and Merc GLC. Love the Merc but getting tempted by the amazing deals available on the XC60.
Felt hard walking back to Tonka this afternoon after test driving the XC60, he looked as ever just perfect.

Oh to always have a reason to own a Disco. Get more dogs, adopt some kids. Buy an inaccessible croft in the Highlands.

The problem with owning a Disco is you get used to the space. You get used to that see-it-all driving position and with the D4, you even get used to a bit of decent performance. Hell, you even get used to paying the service and repair bills! (Okay, maybe not the last one so much).

So when you start looking around for something else, it is really hard to find something that stacks up against it. In some ways, it's like the couple who decide to downsize after the kids have flown the nest and they end up getting an even bigger property. Some compromises, you think you can make until it comes down to it.

Rolling Eyes - thats me...! went from a 3 bed semi in St Albans with one bathroom for 30 years bringing up the kids - thought we would downsize to Cornwall and ended up with a 4 bedroom detached new build with three bathrooms for the two of us (with the grandchildren sleep overs when it suits the daughter....) its a nonsense .... no wonder there is a housing blockage.

Oh - and a D4 now as well, when I used to mange with a Fiesta and then a Mondeo back in the eighties...

All rather odd really.....

I'm struggling with what car I might buy next though - as I really don't like the look of the D5 - which could be any car anywhere IMO...

All first world problems I know... but maybe after a 'hard' brexit - things will be different?

After reading this thread I now realise I am doing things to justify keeping the D3 Shocked Eldest son left home so we got second dog. Moving house to the countryside to house at top of narrow lane. Decided to keep caravan and have more holidays in Blighty. New house will need work done so plenty of trips to tip and builders merchants. My D3 rules my life. And I thought it was SWMBO.

What's the budget we've got to play with??

I ask as I've had several of the options mentioned here before getting the SWMBO the D4.

Get a darker colour interior and it'll feel smaller straight away.

Depending on the money, it really is the smart option Wink

Budget is 50k +/- new or 30k +/- used

This is not an exercise on commonsense either! I love the D3, I know I could get an 8 speed D4 and love it, but don't want another, so the replacement has to satisfy some criteria

- Not a D4
- Premium brand, so not a vauxhall / ford / or anything from Korea or America
- Quiet, comfortable, refined on road
- Physically smaller but still practical (Freelander for example)
- High driving position
- 4WD but not off road (campsites maybe)
- Auto
- Diesel pref a 6 pot (no not the FL then Laughing )
- More fuel efficient and cheaper road tax a bonus but not the main thing

Audi Q5? D Sport? - but there's no 6 pot diesel.
