Replace my D3... with, err, what.

So, when we bought the Disco all those years ago we decided to keep it until winter 2016, and here we are; that time has come. Been a totally brilliant thing, I love it.

However, all the reasons we needed it have now mostly gone - kids grown and mobile, no big house out in the wilds of nowhere to get to in winter and to buy stuff for, no parties of children's school friends to ferry about, not going camping any more.

Other than its obvious qualities, it's expensive, thirsty, noisy, and slow.

Question is, what to get to replace it. We want something smaller, more economical, probably more car-like but still with that commanding driving position and a decent boot / luggage space. 4WD a bonus. No offroad needs. Auto.

SWMBO likes the look of the Evoque but it's microscopic inside. We're going to look at the D5 when it's in, but I'm not thinking it's a good use of our pennies.

New or used.

Ideas?

An interesting dilemma. Almost all cars will be microscopic inside after the D4; if the Evoque is too small, how small would you be prepared to go? Are you ready for the grim reality of it? Do you like the large, deep cut windows of the D3, or are you happy to live with the high waistlines and much smaller windows of a lot of the current designs?

Well, we've got some other cars (A8, Golf, a Z4), they all feel OK in their own right so I don't think interior size is generally a problem ,though I thought the Evoque was very small. Visibility is a clear win for teh Discovery, almost anything compares poorly.

Freelander probably the ideal size. So maybe a Freelander... Laughing Or a Discovery Sport, though I had one as a loan car for a few days and found that it was fitted with a tractor engine.

Others we've thought of. VW Tiguan, BMW X3 or even X1. Volvo XC60 perhaps. Don't like the Mercs. Audi Q5.

Those are great cars (runflat tyres aside) but don't have the commanding driving position (ie. high up) that the present Mrs A1 likes to much. So probably not an option.

We're looking for a Freelander-sized D4 with a V6 diesel really.

Tell me about it re runflats. It was the only negative on my 520d, carrying a spare in the boot of the estate was not an option with 2 dogs. Rolling Eyes Ride was fine as I had peasant spec 17"ers though.

Not for me, the old one is, well, old, and the new one is too much money, silly money in fact.

A nice choice is the cayenne. Went to see one today and it gives you in my opinion what you want. However I was really impressed by the macan as well. It handles like a car but has great visibility

Defo two more to look at and both rock solid residuals.

I have been driving a D3 för three years and time has come to change car. I thought a Mercedes E-class would be a good replacement so I tested one. After the D3 it is truly microscopic inside and you are litterally sitting on the ground when driving. I am getting my new to me D4 on Thursday... Life is to short for being sensible all the time. Thumbs Up
