It is also massive. Like seems huge when we looked at one. If you look at what you get for the money in the Ultimate level it is a lot of car in my opinion. But it has a chassis ladder hence ride can be a tad rough but that’s the only negative. To be fair the roads in the Borders are so bad what ever you drive it will be rough ! Please don’t get me wrong as I have loved and cherished my D3 for the last 10 years but it seems like a few others, Landrover have priced me out of their range. If they made good on the crankshaft problem and covered this if it went wrong then I would be straight into a D4 probably as it would make my life a lot easier. But seemingly like a lot have found out they don’t give a monkeys.

Done a lot of research while out here and also saw one in the flesh so to speak on the campsite. The one we saw was an ultimate with the 7 seats. Like the Disco with the rear seats up in the boot not a lot of storage but we only need the 7 seats for rugby and football so won’t be taking a huge amount anyway. Only thing it doesn’t have is air suspension (but I have had to buy 3 compressors Over the last 10 years) so won’t really miss that. While we will need to go off road a bit it won’t see anything crazy tough anyway. Apparently Ssangyong are trying to get into the Disco market but with a better pricing point. We are joining the NFU which then gives you another £1k off list price hence £33k. Ssangyong must be confident in relatability to offer 7 years or 150 k mileage.

Mercedes running gear, usually reliable.

Potentially a Ssangyong Rexton Ultimate. We can get a brand new OTR for £33k. Buy the service plan and assuming Ssangyong don’t go bust we should get 7 years out of it. Appreciate we could get a decent D4 for the same money but the crankshaft issues scares the crap out of me and don’t see why I should have to get warranty on a car. Appreciate the chances of the crank shaft going are minimal but the risk is there. We have a Ssangyong dealer in Coldstream near to where we live and they are meant to be reliable. 2 wheel drive, or can be 4 wheel and also has low range. Can tow 3.5 tons also and has lots of driver aids on it and decent multimedia. I haven’t driven one yet as still in a france but we will when we are back. If we don’t like it then it may be back to the drawing board. Styling of it on the outside is interesting shall we say, but could say the same about a D5 !!

Interesting choice. I've seen a few around Bath and know of another school parent who gave up on LR and sold her D5 and got a Rexton. She is very happy with it. She says its not as refined ast the LR but its not bad, carries the kids and their clobber and tows her horse box well. She was died in the wool LR but got so fed up with dealer visits and general unreliability that she switched. The 7 year warranty and towing 3.5 tonnes were what swung it. It doesn't look bad in the flesh either. Thumbs Up

Its interesting how the school car park has changed from being a homage to LR to one where Volvo, Porsche and Mercedes are in the ascendency. Reliability and poor dealer service seem to be the drivers for change.

If you go for the Rexton it'd be good to hear your thoughts and views through ownership. Its got a lot going for it Thumbs Up

Will do for sure, gutted the D3 didn’t hold on for a few more months as it was being sold this year anyway. But I hope with the new parts, brand new tyres, discs, pads, air compressor it has to be worth £2.5. Seats are immaculate and being a HSE has a lot of extras. Looking at eBay £2.5k seems about right in scrap value
