Replacement Engine Advice D3
Hi Folks,
Well the fan and the brown stuff have finally come together for my 2006 D3.
Went to local LR specialist for some routine (ish) work and they phone to say what about the dreadful engine noise. I wasn't aware of anything but maybe the wheel bearings (or radio) were masking it. I went round there and it was indeed running rough as anything. Various diagnostics run and finally there was swarf found in the oil filter. They suspect a bearing is breaking up somewhere and the engines been condemned. The cars only done 56k and been well looked after.
Anyone got any experience of these ebay people offering refurb'd D3 engines fitted for around the £2500 to £3k mark?
I know you get what you pay for but it maybe worth in the region of £6000 to £6500 as a trade in or do I just put it up for spares and repairs and cut my losses?
Dunno if these people get the £3k they are asking for them with spares and repairs. Any advice, (preferably sensible) much appreciated.

If it is any help, I know a company in Germany that did a REALLY good job on my own D3.
I live in Luxembourg, and they came to collect the car, took it to their hanger (I have been to visit it, and it is actually quite impressive), replaced the engine with a used engine (with 1 year warranty), checked the whole car over, replaced the turbo, injectors & glowplugs (with new engine) and brought the car back to me in Luxembourg.
Total cost: €6300
I am actually very happy with their service!!

It comes down to cost effectiveness at the end of the day its an older D3 which isn't worth more than £6000\£6500, I can't find much info about the outfits on ebay offering a supply and fit for £2500. Looking at their feedback they've not got any for engine replacements.
You get what you pay for at teh end of the day and I don't want to shell out and end up with another problem. They offer a warranty but it worthless if they supply junk
Sadly it's probably not worth wasting your money on "supply and fit for £2,500".
Better to sell as is, or break & use your £2500 towards a replacement car.

Agreed. Plus whether an 06 D3 is worth £6k is debatable, they are only worth what peeps will pay for it, but it will have a higher value as a pile of parts, plus add 3k on to that (2.5k + VAT) should be a decent sum to get a replacement. Too many peeps have gone down the cheap engine replacement route and thrown good money after bad.

Such a dam shame.
At 56k miles it must almost be a manufacturing fault. Must say i think these engines like to be used, but it seems its mostly pot luck.

It’s a complete lottery. Some peeps get hundreds of thousands out of an engine, some tens of thousands. It’s a lottery I’m not interested in playing any more.

Yes, fair comment, and i know you looked after your disco.
I change the oil at 10,000 miles, now on 200k plus, but roulette wheel is spinning

Unfortunately I kind of lost confidence after my D3 died, even though my D4 was faultless in my ownership. When I was out of mobile coverage in Norway on last Scando RT I was getting distinctly nervous. I kind of made the decision up there to chop her, it was just a case of when.

Indeed I agree with all of the above, I do less than 8,000 miles a year and serviced as per LR through out so was probably a manufacturing fault as its happened to so many.
A local garage as a trade in will give me approx £5500 allegedly but it needs to be running. Turn up on a transporter and you’ll hear the laughing far and wide. A refurb’d engine may get me past that hurdle but I need a working car now.
I’ll give a run as spares or repair on eBay over Christmas I'm sure someone will stick an dengine of some calibre in it and sell it on, if that fails then who knows.
