Some pointers please guys and gals . . . .
Whilst traveling down to the Smoke recently, the cheap, nasty, blue neon pimped USB socket that is hard-wired into the right hand end of the small panel on the centre consol that sports the ashtray decided to overheat and produce enough smoke to lead anyone watching to believe that a new pope had been elected. It was mega hot and had clearly shorted.
Any pointers for removing this piece of the dash so I can fit a LR branded 12V socket into it as a replacement? the panel seems to hinge downwards but doesn't seem to want to pop out. In addition, is there any easy way of checking to see whether the rest of the wiring behind this panel hasn't now been reduced to a multi-coloured blob of plastic (as has happened to a car I owned many years ago after being back-ended and all of the rear light clusters being busted up).

pull off the outer trim, then unscrew that panel if i recall correctly
