Ave,

The guy in the stealers spares dept knew of the issue and smiled wryly when I mentioned it to him. Apparently one of the first symptoms is the turbo not kicking in as the car thinks you're pressing the brake pedal. Was an issue on Freelanders as well he said.

Anyway, proper LR spare bulbs now to hand Very Happy

I got mine back, and had the same problem after driving 3 miles... It went back to the Dealer for another 2 weeks whilst they tried to find the fault... They test drove it for 190 miles and it didn't fault for them once, so it was returned to me... 'fault not found' Mmmm Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Check the brake light bulbs. If the legs holding the filaments are helluva close together then I'd suggest changing them for LR bulbs.

I'll check in the morning. I must admit to using non LR bulbs.

Be careful you get a good quality bulb and get it in the right way around.

Not knowing about these problems, when I replaced my lamp, I just used what my local filling station had sold me. It was an Osram P21/5W Type 11. Up till now I haven't had any problem - I guess I was lucky!

Actually, the Osram bulb looks very similar to the original, which seems to be from LJBerner.

Did a search and found this post.

I changed a brake light that was out last month with a Lucas bulb from my local BP filling station and twice since then the car has shown on the LCD display that it has an 'Engine System Fault' and has gone into reduced power mode. A switch off and restart got rid of it straight away the first time but the second time it needed locking and leaving a few minutes. Anyone now is all fine. Is my car falling foul of the non OEM brake bulb issue or is there an issue.

PS Perhaps unrelated but it is also telling me very frequently that engine coolant is low when it is on max.

Thanks for any help.

Hi 110CSW,
For the sake of a bulb, I would replace the Lucas unit with a genuine LR bulb and see if all is OK.

Re the coolant level: This is a well known fault with the level sensor and will need to be replaced.

Best Wishes,
Peter

Much appreciated. 30 mile drive to a dealer hence the easier option last time! Will give it a go.

Well I have been to Stratstone Land Rover and they supplied a Ring Automotive lamp. No idea if this is OEM but it is what a main dealer is selling. Anyway I fitted it and it works. Lets see if the 'Engine System Fault' message comes on!

Think Dealers must sell whatever bulbs they can get there hands on at the time.

Went into Barnstaple dealer and they were dishing out Lucus bulbs.

Given that its Lucas I bought at a random independent garage (and have now taken out) then I don't have much hope!

When you're running a production line, you should never "single source" your components if you can avoid it (something that LR found out to their cost with the D4 camera...)

LR are very likely to buy bulbs from a variety of 'decent' bulb manufacturers - Ring, Lucas, Hella to name but three.

I've just inspected a box of Ring 5/21 from my local motor factor. Out of the six I have left, 3 have filaments that are |) shaped, 1 is parallel and the other 2 are |( shaped. The filaments will move and flex as they get hot and get vibrated.

By all means avoid anything thrown together by a political prisoner on the far side of the world if at all possible (but I wouldn't like to guess where Ring are made nowadays...) but I imagine that any bulb made by a reputable manufacturer would be OK.

My Audi A4 used to eat 'cheap' bulbs too but as my local supplier sells Ring and they seem to be OK, then I'll stick with them.

Mind you, the D3 had a blown brake light when we picked it up a month ago so no doubt I'll have to eat my post in due course...

And of course, the D4 has gone LED...
