Replacing front bumper camera on facelift D4

Hi everyone

My front bumper cameras have some sandblasting on the lenses and I want to remove them to either try polish the lenses or replace the cameras.

How do I remove these cameras on the facelifted D4?

Does anyone know of an option of a better quality camera to replace them with and if it is a simple plug and play option?

Thanks
John

What year? If 14 to 16 they are just clipped in. There aren’t any better cameras I’m afraid but I don’t think the camera is the issue. I think it’s the screen res that makes the image appear low quality.

Thank you for the reply.

Sorry I was a bit vague with the term facelift instead of saying it is a 2014 model, so the 2014 to 2016 models.

I was hoping for more information on how to remove them without damaging anything. Where are the clips, how do you access the clips to remove the camera, can you get access from inside/behind the bumper somehow, etc.?

You have to remove the bumper. Not a huge job

If you can get your hand up from underneath then that’s the hard bit done. They are only held in to the holder by a clip on 2 sides which form part of the holder. If you can get your hand on them or see it, it’s pretty obvious. If I remember I’ll get a photo.

Here’s a photo of the bracket with camera. The bracket/holder is normally bonded to the bumper. Just lift each clip circled in red away from the cam and push it out from the front of the bumper.

Thank you for the information and photo.

I tried to get behind or under the bumper, but it is completely closed. The bumper itself goes back until it meets the wheel arch liner.

I removed the left side fog light (as that is the side with the most damage to the camera lens) and tried to access the camera from there. However, with the windscreen washer reservoir mounted behind the fog light, and the fog light mounting getting in the way, the space is very limited. I could only get a finger to the back of the camera. I could maybe reach the top clip, but would not be able to reach under the camera for the second clip.

I will have to see what can come off behind the bumper, such as the wheel arch liner, to see if I can get access that way, But the washer reservoir may still be in the way. Other than that it seems you need to remove the whole bumper to remove the cameras.

I managed to get the right side camera out by removing the fog light. There is enough space that side to get to the camera, although still rather awkward.

The left side is still a problem as the water bottle or windscreen washer reservoir is in the way and it is impossible to get your hand past it to get below the camera. I can only manage to release the upper retaining clip on the camera.

I have managed to unscrew the lens on the right side camera. Does anyone know if you can get replacement lenses somewhere, as I am sure it will be a lot cheaper than the whole camera?

MikeBob: Sorry, I somehow missed your post earlier. Removing the bumper is not so simple, especially if you don't know how certain items are attached to each other, or what needs to be removed first (or the order in which things must be done). I have forgotten the little bit I used to know. I will need someone to show me again.

It seems the lenses are not available separately, which seems strange as they just screw off the camera. I will have to source two new cameras somewhere, or used ones from the other positions. No luck with used so far. Still looking around for new ones at a reasonable price.
