Replacing Panoramic Roof without Insurance

Hi all,

I've picked up a crack on the rear section of the panoramic glass roof on my D3. My insurers (A Plan) have advised it's not covered under the glass part of the insurance policy. They have advised that if I were to claim against my vehicle policy, I would likely see a rise in premium renewals for the next five years as well as losing NCB discounts etc.

Annoying when it's just a small crack and doesn't appear to be letting in water (yet!).

They have recommended obtaining a private quote to see how much it would cost to replace the glass panel without going down the insurance quote. I haven't been able to find any information on how difficult this would be to do, or how much it's likely to cost. Don't know if a panel could be salvaged and reused for instance.

If anyone has any tips or suggestions I'd be very interested to hear them?

Many thanks,
Chris

Possibly of not much help Chris, but a thread on the panoramic roof was raised recently.
You might just find something of use in there. Thumbs Up

I have seen salvaged ones for sale…

Apart from transport and size and weight when fitting.. Glueing itself should be rather straightforward

depends when your next insurance renewal is.
You could wait and ask which insurance companies cover the roof under the glass replacement scheme and go with them Whistle Whistle

Thanks folks.

For those interested, I had a quote from Land Rover Parts last night of £827.51 incl. VAT.

The cost of labour in replacing the glass panels is what I'm waiting on now (pending a LR quote plus three independent windscreen fitters). Autoglass wouldn't quote for a private transaction, although the girl I was speaking to sounded like it was just too much hard work and she wanted to go home! Neutral

Once I get the total price I'll have to weigh up whether it's worth coughing up the extra now versus risking an on-cost to my private policies on 2x cars for the next five years.

Anyone have a 'general rule' on how much % a renewal tends to increase after a claim?

Cheers

Morning CY

Sorry to hear about your roof, I was the one that started the other post as mine is broken and cracked. Not quite as bad as yours. I have found mine isn't letting water in so have ignored it for the moment. I was thinking of getting Prospeed roof rack panels for some extra protection but I'm in for a very long wait.

I'm interested to see what your quote is from LR.

Hi Nik,

I hadn't spotted your thread (and I did search!) - thanks Ronp for sharing.

I've had a couple of quotes back now, I'll upload copies to here as they may be a useful reference to keep on the forum.

Quote 1 - Land Rover (Pentland, Edinburgh) - £2,418 incl. VAT

Quote 2 - Premier Windscreens (independent) - £1,272 incl. VAT

The LR quote seems to have ballooned since I spoke to them yesterday, when they cited £827.51 including VAT for the parts. I have also read various references on here, and other forums, of the roof panel being replaced externally without needing to drop the headliner etc. Makes me more inclined to avoid the LR route.

I am still waiting for Auto Windscreens and National Windscreens (both UK wide fitters) to respond and will report back here if people are interested.

not panoramic roof but I've replaced windscreens on 2 cars in last 5 years using a small independent fitter and, in both cases, whole job was less than the excess on the policies.

might be worth finding someone near you to do it rather than one of the big outfits ?

I successfully fitted a complete panoramic roof on a Freelander 2 a couple of years back, bought a secondhand one from Ireland it was shipped over in one piece, hardest part was removing the old one, I still have some of the wire I used. You really need two people one either side to lift it on as you only get one chance to get it in the right position, you only need two tubes of the correct adhesive, it is easier than you imagine.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Just an update for those interested in costs.

After receiving three quotes I've opted to go with Auto Windscreens, who happen to be the supplier my insurer (A Plan) would have used. They are supplying a genuine JLR dealer part for the rear glass panoramic roof panel and fitting it for £984.43 incl. VAT.

Given that my excess would have been £400 for the insurance, I calculated that the risk to the premium on my 2x car insurance policies (plus others' cars I'm insured on as a named driver) is worth avoiding therefore I'd prefer to pay in cash for a private transaction.

Auto Windscreens are a nationwide supplier in the UK so the above quote should be comparable if anyone else decides to privately replace their pano roof.

Cheers
Chris
