Replacing the turbo for under £100 |
|
So as suspected and from comments on the post below removing the turbo is now going to be the route forward.
https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/turbo-fault-p132b-184550.html
As mentioned this is a project car and not our main transport so spending £700 on a new turbo aint going to happen as its a third of the purchase price and the car is not a necessity
I have purchased a turbo for £50, the breaker stated that the car was burning oil so hence the price of the turbo was priced accordingly. On inspection there is very little movement in the shaft, no visible signs of oil on the compressor side, the inlet to the turbine (from the manifold) has signs of a covering of oil which indicates the oil was upstream from the engine (had this before on my disco 2 and had to replace the head although was diagnosed by a third party as the turbo).
So the plan is to replace the turbo for £50 plus gaskets and seals get the engine running before fitting the exhaust and hope for the best (hopefully no P132 blue smoke or oil spitting out). If this fails I will pull the old turbo apart and clean the unison ring and vanes and if necessary replace the cartridge.
So the question I have is once all the hard work of removing the turbo is undertaken and a replacement turbo fitted how long would it take to pull the turbo off again if this plan doe not work?
I will be following these instructions:-

Any further recommendations appreciated... yes I know you all will think I am foolish but masochism is what D3's are all about Owning a Discovery 3 is like dating a model.. a firm body and shape, wow.. the ride is fantastic > for this your wallet can take a pounding and you worry about being deflated at any time...

No not unless you strip the turbine apart but nobody does that these days as replacement cartridges are availible.
