Replica wheels – ok or not?

John Craddock are selling 20” RRS Stormer replica wheels which I really like the look of and think will look great on my D4, according to JC they have passed all the testing and have identical load rating and are as good a quality etc etc, so apart from not having Land Rover stamped on the back they apparently will be identical.

Now, the genuine wheels are circa £500+ each therefore £2,000 for a set, which I just cannot justify, whereas the replicas are about £900 inc wheel-caps and postage and vat. Which along with a set of new tyres will be circa £1,400 which I can do the man-maths for.

My question is, is it just vanity with not having the LR stamp or is there any horror stories or no-nos with regards replica wheels?

Thanks!

plenty of horror stories with replica just have a forum search.

I'd go for a second hand set but make sure they're genuine and get a refurb if needed

Might also be worth asking your insurance company where you stand, as I swap my wheels over to a winter set and also used to use a set of stormers on my D3 and first D4 and asked my insurance and they said so long as they are genuine LR wheels they didn't have any issues.

Just a thought.

Thanks guys. Not really what I wanted to hear. I thought with coming from a reputable LR ‘specialist’ that they would be better replicas than if bought perhaps elsewhere.

The only problem with buying 2nd hand and having them refurbed is the overall price, it gets almost as expensive as buying a new set. Plus obviously a lot more inconvenient!

Hi Dan (I previously bought the IID BT Tool from you) – do you have any deals on a set of 20’s, either HSE/Landmark/RRS etc….??

Replica wheels would be fine on a Eurobox, not a 3 ton lump

Very rarely are they rated strong enough to carry a Disco/RR

Actually thats not completely true - genuine LR 20" (9.5J) Stormers were rated at 900kg. There were some Cromodora ones rated at 1050kg so better than the OEM ones.

Me and one or 2 others on here had them a while back. Its worth keep searching as you might get lucky.

Stormers are old now - how about looking at some of the newer style 20's, such as these:

There's quite a few sets of these about. I have seen takeoff sets (so delivery mileage) for sub 500 quid.

Thanks all.

Like I say, apparently they had been tested and were all up to LR specs.

Surely unless buying an obvious cheep replica there is no reason why a decent replica wouldn't be any different to branded LR ones, same design therefore if the same metal and forging/casting or whatever it is, then should be the same strength.

I'm not arguing especially so that I can buy them, just that surely they may actually be ok.

If there is any doubt though I definitely don't want to risk it......

... so should be as reliable as crankshafts then? Whistle

Actually, I'm with you on this ... if it's tested, rated and approved then there shouldn't be an issue.

I'm firmly in the "Don't use replica rims" camp.

Buy a set of used genuine ones. They come up for sale here on a regular basis. Or search the net. Thumbs Up

Thanks all. What is it with all the as new “take off” wheels? They can’t all have been removed when new..!

There are lots on eBay and Gumtree for sale all stating that they've only done delivery miles and have as new tyres, but strangely they all have the centre caps removed.....

I called up about a set of genuine (not doubting they were) as new HSE black & diamond cut 20’s but the seller said there was some “handling marks” in the lacquer as it was so soft. Screamed to me that they’d been refurbed but the seller denied it so I left it.

But there are dozens for sale like it, I can understand a few sets having been taken off when new but not as many claim they have been....

i did 40k on a set of replica stormers, they were on the car when i got it so could have done much more, i towed 3 tonne + hit pot hole etc and they were perfect i even hit a stone on the kirb side really hard whcih Censored the tyre but the wheel was only lightly marked.

if you buy Censored then i can see issues but if a reputable dealer is selling them and they are load rated for the lr i see no issue

if im honest now though i would now go for some landmark wheels (stormers old now) come up on ebay for sensible money if you keep looking genuine sets often with tyres
