Returning to the fold - am I quite mad?

Evening all

It's been about 3 years of trouble free motoring since I said goodbye to my beloved D3, but now my lease car is going back and I've got some money in my bank account, which is a sure fire sign that I haven't been owning a Land Rover!

I do miss the D3 (I've had a Skoda Superb, which has been great, but dull) and mithered about what I could get to replace it.

We have an electric car on a great salary sacrifice deal, which is spot on for 90% of the driving we do, and we're keeping that, but I was drawn to look at D4s. They are as I remembered them - nicer D3s and I have been sanctioned by SWMBO that I can get one in a few weeks when there's space on the drive.

I've a budget of around £22k, and like the look of the facelift D4 HSE lux's. There's a few to choose from at that price point, and they tick all the family boxes too, especially the screens in the back to keep the kids quiet on trips to Cornwall.

Mileage will be relatively low, especially at the min, so I'm not fussed that one has to be "low" mileage.

Having read up on here again, it looks like the main issue is the crankshaft, and whether there is any warranty suitable to guard against any future mishap.

So the things I think I need to check with any potential vendors are:

1) Service history, especially the big belt service at 7(?) years or 70000 miles.
2) Warranty (my preference would be to buy from a garage at this price) and make sure crank replacement is explicitly written in any warranty
3) Any major components replaced (air compressors etc)

Are there any other obvious questions I should be asking?

I've seen a couple of cars with the cream leather, and I love the look of it, but wonder about the practicalities of it, especially with two kids (13 & 10) - any one any thoughts of how hardwearing it is?

Other thing is tyres - most I see have Pirelli scorpion zeros on, which seem fine if just on road, but I want some mild off road tyres for a bit of gentle lane-ing, in the past I've have gone straight in for Pirelli ATRs but it seems they're done. Any recommendations for 255/55/20 that aren't too noisy? Duratracs seem to get decent reviews?

Ultimately, it's a ridiculous decision from a financial point of view, but I've missed having the D3 and if anything, the last 18 months or so have taught me that there's no point being the richest man in the graveyard, so I'm going to treat myself, but I don't want to be ruined, so any pointers will be gratefully received.

Looking forward to being back among it!!

Sounds like you know the answers to all your questions, just get one, 3 or 4.

given current uncertainties about warranties, stick £6K of your pot in a bank account, find a nice car for £16K-ish and just enjoy. Very Happy

I always immediately replaced the 20” rims with either 19” or better still aftermarket 18” rims. There’s a good thread running on AT tyres in the tyre section.

IMO, having EU6 (AdBlue) is non negotiable, if you’re spending that kind of money on a diesel.

Thumbs Up

If you expect low mileage ahead maybe a petrol V8 would be worth considering!

If you are inclined to be fearful regarding the TDV6 (and who'd blame you) the petrol V8 should let you sleep a little more peacefully. You could also consider a Range Rover with the TDV8!!

Do you know which year the EU6 engine started from?

Pretty sure some 2015s are EU6...

Having owned an EU6 I'd agree that it's the one to go for..

You'll enjoy it for sure!

Thumbs Up

EU6 started in mid 2015. Mine was registered end of June 2015 and was one of the first. It is the 2016 Model Year. The other things that happened with the 2016 MY, from memory, are:

Full size spare as standard
Ad Blue - that's how EU6 was achieved - so you have a separate tank for this liquid
No rear climate control available
Ivory leather not available

If you're driving in London, Bristol or Birmingham (and eventually other cities) having the EU6 model will save you paying the daily fees.

I thought that D4 had to be on minimum 19” rims due to the size of the brake calipers...
 D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY

D5 Commercial - Handed back when I left that job…
D4 Commercial (2014MY) - gone
D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)

Smiles per Mile - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear - all fully IVA'd and registered!

There are a few aftermarket 18s that fit. Tuffant and Compmotive spring to mind. Thumbs Up

Nice, thanks for the info. With having the 'leccy car, I doubt I'd drive into Leeds much (nor any other cities) but it's a good reminder. Is the lack of rear climate a particular loss? Weren't the pipes on the D3 problematic? I'll never be sat in the back, so don't suppose it matters!

No, never found the lack of separate rear climate control an issue at all for my rear passengers. There are, of course, vents for the rear but control is limited to opening/closing or altering direction, the temperature is controlled from the front.
