Rev fluctuation, shudder. Gearbox? Or something else?

Apologies in advance for a long post, but I’m struggling to know what to believe regarding my 2005 TDV6 Auto. 164k miles. I thank you in advance for indulging me!

Symptoms:
1. Revs fluctuating by about 200rpm. This happens most when driving along under constant moderate load (eg slight incline on a motorway). It does also happen to a lesser degree under light load. There is no change in vehicle speed when this happens. I occasionally hear a metallic sound as the revs fall. Seems to be at speeds over 30mph only and revs between 1500-2200ish. I can ‘power’ through it; more throttle forces a change down and it doesn’t do it at higher revs.
2. Shudder when changing gear at higher loads (accelerating hard, hills).
3. Some transmission shunt (getting back on the throttle after coasting).

Previous history:
Car new to me. Previous owner had it for years and had traded it in for a Range Rover. I’ve got about £30k worth of maintenance receipts from them!
Among the receipts are the following…
Transmission oil change at 64k, Trans oil/filter change with conditioner at 110k, 2x trans oil changes last year with Dr Tranny.

Only other obvious fault is that the glow plugs don’t work (and one of them has been snapped off)!

Reading the forum, I was convinced this was a torque converter / clutch pressure issue.
I have done 2x fluid changes + new filter + new solenoids + new mechatronic seals. I also put in 2 tubes of shudder fix. This improved things a little (especially the shudder) but I’ve still got symptoms 1 and 2.
I therefore took it to a local gearbox specialist (Oakdene in Nottingham) on the recommendation of my local Land Rover indy. He and I were both prepared for a trade involving his labour and about £2k of my money…
We went out on a 40 minute test drive during which he did lots of things to try and confuse the box and to my surprise he declared the gearbox healthy. He said he thought there was an engine, rather than gearbox, problem. Also the shunt is probably a worn rear diff, which I can believe.

I have no engine or gearbox codes stored. The only consistent codes relate to unused relay and low freq coil in the BCM (B1B02-28 and B1C57-14), and some sporadic CAN communication ones which may be down to a slightly weak battery.
Codes were read by my Autel AP200 and the gearbox chap’s workshop reader.

So far I have checked:
MAF is clean and gives sensible readings
MAP likewise
EGR’s are blanked and plates don’t leak
Injectors all have the same resistance, and offset values between 899-1218
Engine idles consistently without any rev fluctuation audible or visible on rev counter.
No visible smoke from exhaust even on hard acceleration, turbo seems to kick in appropriately.

I’m really struggling here. Am I missing something, or do I need a second opinion on the gearbox?

I'll bet my last dollar that your torque converter is on its way out. My 2005 did precisely the same at 155k miles. A new TC and it now works beautifully.

I'd get it changed out before it causes wear to your gearbox. It's a mid-price job, mine about £1500 or so.

The stuff I did was pretty simple on ramps on the drive. I think the TC is a bit beyond my capabilities.

I'm thinking I might have to improve my capabilities.... Or can anyone recommend a different gearbox place in Notts (or nearby).

Try Planet gears in Peterborough the owner is Roy a real helpful pleasant chap he won't sell you anything you don't need , I just had my gearbox rebuilt and new TC and crossover pipe fitted (I supplied that )and all that cost £2700 , so for just a TC I think £2000 is steep I bet they gave you the blag" oh it's body off mate " nonsense just drop the gearbox out , And can honestly say this is the issue you are having ,
Sounds like the previous owner was told this and had a vein attempt to solve it with a few flushes and Dr Tranny this is only ever a short term fix , I know because I used in mine about 8 months ago it did work but inevitably I had to bit the bullet and get a new TC .
Oh and I had a shunt in the drive train that was excessive back lash in the rear diff that cost me £780 for a rebuilt diff and fitting ,a long winded job exhaust off spare wheel off , heat shield off ,drain the diff ,both rear hubs unbolted to let rear driveshafts move enough to be pulled from the diff ,unbolt rear propshaft then unbolt the diff ,and put it all back again .

Thanks all,
Just thought it was odd that the gearbox place effectively turned down 2k of work. (That was for dropping the gearbox, new TC, new input shaft and seals +/- clutch packs).

I've booked her in for a second opinion at an independent LR specialist.

This sounds almost identical to the issue I’m having. Super sluggish at 1500rpm with dips in power/RPM; vibrations at 1500RPM at speed; and shunting, especially in low range.

I’m almost convinced it’s the TC too judging by these here threads. I’ve got 130k+ too, so I might have to get it booked in 🙄
