Revs fluctuate when driving stable speeds

Hi,

My Disco3 has the strange rev hunting behavior, similar to this video http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-2768384953457429371#.

I have this at different speeds e.g. 90km p/h, 124km p/h etc and at different RPM (often around 2000, but not always). It seems the engine is searching for the right rev, giving extra fuel and reducing it again. Its happening with both a cold and warm engine, at stable speeds, with and without cruise control. Its very irritating.

There are several treats on this topic but non of them is giving a real answer to the problem. Often the gear box is issue comes up (double flush), but I believe that is not related. I believe its some sort of sensor or software problem.

I would really appreciate a reply from somebody that had this problem and solved it.

Thanks a million.

Thats my car in the video, and I'm afraid I sold it and bought a newer D3 before it was sorted out. The new one does not exhibit the same behaviour. A gearbox oil change was suggested to me as the first thing to try to cure it.

Hi Joan,
I, also, had this problem (although not as bad as in the video).

As my D3 is manual, it wasn't the dreaded auto problem.

I mentioned it to the dealer when it went in for a (B) service.

They couldn't find the problem, but did a software upgrade.

The problem was solved. (Sorry, I didn't enquire as to what the software upgrade was to address (sticking vanes on the turbo?).

Best Wishes,
Peter

Hi,

Yes Gareth thanks for posting the video. It perfectly shows the issues with the revs. So so far the solutions are:
1.) Sell your disco3 when it starts to Rev Hunt
2.) Get a software upgrade

Solution 1 isn't a option for me, as I love my Disco (and I can't afford a new one yet). So I will go for solution nr 2, and tomorrow I will go to the local LL specialist (Route58) to see if they can upgrade the software. I will let you know the outcome.

thanks

Rev. Problem Fixed

Hi,

Good news, today I got my car back and from the local Land Rover specialist (www.route58.nl) and they fixed the problem! Apparantly the fluctuating revs is a very uncommon problem and it took a couple of steps.
1.) First they thought it was the ESG (?) exhaust system as it has several error message in the log. But fixing the ESG didn't do the trick.
2.) Then they upgraded the software, the issue with the revs remained
3.) Then they changed the gear-box oil-filter (pretty big operation, need to lift the engine + refresh the gearbox oil), and then the problem was fixed. Very Happy

Next week we will refresh the gear box oil again, to get rid of the old oil as much as possible. All in all it was a pretty expensive operation but I am glad that its fixed and I don't need a new gearbox.

Now my Disco 3 drives wonderfull again. Gareth and Peter thanks for your help.
