Roof rails and cycle carrier

I am trying to loacte the best place to buy roof rails and a cycle carrier.Apparently Land Rover(according to the dealer) do not make a cross bars to mount on the rails which is compatible with any bike rack on the market. I also want to carry 2 kayaks. Have seen something on the Thule website but not sure if this fits with the Land Rover rails.Thule website is a bit vague. Has anyone out there managed to get a acycle rack on to the roof Sad

Hi Pricey

Land Rover do do a roof mount cycle carrier VTG500050 p/n..
They just don't market it for the D3 in any of the brochures as most people would feel uncomfortable having some cycles sat that high up.

you can ask your dealer to order in for you to view.

most folk here find 'on the ball' racks easiest.....I like many others have a thule 903......its quite a height to hoist a bike onto the roof!

Re: roof rails

Is it essential that it's a roof carrier. I costed it all up and at £300 with rails and bars plus the bike carriers themselves its a very expensive exercise...

I used advice from RonP - check his gallery Thumbs Up and adapted a rear carrier to suit. MIne is just like his...
D4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

For information, I sell my roof rails (yet on eBAY), perhaps I could ship them from France to UK (3Kg).
Tell me if interested.

Yes , only last week and it was a sinch. If you just follow the instructions provided it should only take you 30 - 40 mins tops.

You could have saved yourself a few quid by buying them from Nick @ Yeovil btw

I carry bikes on the roof although it is not easy to get them up there - I had to buy a cheap step ladder in B&Q but even then you still have to be careful not to bash the doors. I've got the standard LR roof rails and crossbars and had to have my Thule bike racks modified to fit as I didn't want to buy yet another set of bike racks to fit the new roof bars. I got an engineer to make up aluminium plates with studding to match the wider roof bars and then bolted the bike racks to the plates - worked a treat and cost about £30 for the offcuts of aluminium and labour. It saves having to worry about noseweights etc when towing a caravan with a towbar mounted bike rack as well.

Cheers
Glen

Discovery on the roof

Using a small (two step) ladder, I can put a Discovery on the roof of my Discovery!

In the past, I've managed as many as five solo bikes on the roof at once when towing a caravan. Getting them on is mostly about balance rather than outright strength.
