Caravan Tyre replacement.

My caravan is due some new tyres. Not for the first time I should add. When it left the factory it had 185/75 x 14 tyres with a weight limit of 850 kgs per tyre. The van fully loaded weighs 1,700 kgs meaning that the tyres are on the limit. At the first change I upgraded to 195/75 x 14 with 950 kgs weight limit. This gives me a margin. Several tyre dealers have told me that 195/75 x 14 tyres are a rarity. I either have to go back to the 185 or change the wheels to 15 inch. Some dealers can find the 195/75 but they are dated some years ago. As much as 3 or 4 years before they are used. I have tried the tyre dealer sponsor on the forum and he does not have 14 inch at all. Has anyone else come across this problem and how has it been resolved? Thanks for any suggestions.

Have tries Camskill and Black Circle but both seem to import to order. They cannot give any details as to date of the tyres. I know I could order and return but does seeem a bit of hassle. My regular tyre chappie tells me that most people do not know that tyres have dates. I do and have seen the results of old tired tyres going pop.

Yes you are right about dates but if the tyres have been in storage, correctly stored they are actually fine to use, its knowing whether they have been stored correctly that is the issue.

Not necessarily, single axle yes, not so much with twin axles.

Have you looked on Openeo? They seem to have a few different tyres in that size for vans @ 950kgs. Any tyres I’ve bought from them have only been months old. But in their FAQs they give options if older tyres are supplied, ie they will take Tyres back at their cost or give you a discount.

While on date codes, when my wife bought her 2008 FL2 the Tyres had loads of grip but looked a bit perished but still passed the NCT (Irish MOT) twice. We decided that even though they had passed we still decided to change them. When we took them off we checked the date codes..... the Tyres were 17 years old Shocked

My 2nd caravan, many years ago, was a Safairi (pricey in its time) was fitted with 7 year old tyres on the day of delivery. They were soon exchanged but they were 10 ply! Have searched quite hard and it seems that Marshall Tyres do make a 195/75 x 14 with the correct load rating. Any one know anything about them. Korean I think?

If you are having this problem locating tyres, think of the problem you'll have if you need one in an emergency while on holiday, change the rims and flog the old wheels, plenty of 15" alloys around.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

If run at no more than 60mph the tyres could be overloaded by 10% and caravan manufacturers in the past used this to their advantage. Not sure if it still applies
