It states in my manual not to use biodiesel in the TDV6.

I'm sure that LR do not reccomend the use of bio-diesel in D3's. I believe it was discussed in a thread last summer if my memory is functioning properly.

I read an article in last Sunday's Mail on Sunday, about the government ministers all getting a brand new Jag XJ 'on the company'. This was for security reasons, and it was felt the Jag was justified on speed and space. The alternative on offer was a Toyota Prius (hmmm I wonder which one I'd choose hmmm difficult one).

Anyway, the government justified the alleged 'excess consumption' of the Jag by saying that they were choosing the new Jag XJ Diesel - and that they would all be run on carbon-neutral bio diesel.

Now correct me please if I am wrong, but does the new jag XJ not use the TDV6 engine?

http://www.jaguar.co.uk/uk/en/vehicles/xj/..._range.htm says you're right! Anyone fancy dropping a note to The Sun or The Mirror about this? Wink

Never mind the papers, perhaps someone should tell Land Rover.

They obviously don't realise that they have an engine capable of silencing ALL the critics that persecute us for driving horrendous polluting gas guzzlers.

Land Rover are missing a marketing trick here big time.

So can you put biodiesel in the TDV6 or not? Because at 20p a litre less, thats £16 a tank full to be saved... Shocked

Yes Gareth same block but twin turbo, rather than one, and tuned for more power than torque as in D3. So essentially it is the same, but politicians being only half informed, or only listening and repeating what they want to probably think all diesels will run on bio. Or say one thing and do something completely different. All a matter of your point of perception Confused

LR will always say not to use bio, to cover their legal behind.

I think that Jaguar/Land Rover/Ford etc, have simply not tested the engine on Bio Derv. I would think that if it became a seriously contentious issue, then it would be tested and certified. It would probably need a different tune, and maybe different seals in some components. Mechanically I can't see any damage being caused.

Land Rover are probably just covering their backsides in case it does suffer damage when BD is used. It probably won't but who would want to risk it. Not me - yet

But if the price differential gets big enough, people will.

It's the ethanol base of biofuel that dries out seals and fuel pump bearings etc. it can also cause premature failure of some silicone components and fuel lines. Biofuel doesn't have the lubrication properties of diesel so it will also cause accelerated wear on valve stems. all of which will contribute to a poor engine efficiency, thereby increasing emmisions.... some 'bio' fuel that is eh?

Exactly.
Just as an aside a friend uses bio a lot in his old 205 diesel that he runs to work. But he always tries to have some standard stuff in the tank.
He ends up changing the fuel filter about every 3k cos it gets clogged if left any longer.
You also don't want to be sat behind him in a Q as it smells like a dodgy chippy Shocked
I think u r correct on the seals & gaskets etc I believe they can rot or get clogged up.

I believe that I read here in Germany that bio-diesel is more corrosive on hoses and connections. Does anyone else know whether this is true? Because of this suspicion, I have therefore never tried it out on my current VW diesel.

Here's a snippet from an admittedly biased site....

http://www.bio-power.co.uk/faq.htm

"Can I burn bio-fuels in any normal diesel engine?
YES, nearly all compression ignition engines will burn BIO-DIESEL without any modification. However, rubber parts in the fuel delivery system may dissolve because Bio-diesel is a very active solvent. Bio-diesel can also remove the protective coatings used in fuel tanks which then block fuel filters"

Think i'll give it a miss myself Rolling Eyes
