Running boards

In specifying my Disco3 I quite fancy having running boards fitted (are they called 'running boards' nowadays; sounds rather old-fashioned but I only have a German brochure here, where they are called Trittbretter, part no VTK500010). However, the ones on offer seem to stick out too far for my taste, at least as seen in photos, e.g. those in the thread about the Arctic Frost Disco.

Does anyone have any experience of the somewhat smaller versions, called Schwellerschutz here, with part nos VTD500020 (steel) or VTD500010 (black)? Are there any photos of Discos with these parts in the gallery? Are these lesser versions any help at all getting in and out of the car or do you really need the proper thing?

Are there any disadvantages with any of these accessories, e.g. off-road?

And has anyone had the stick-on side protection (Seitenschutzleisten, part no DGJ500010PMA) fitted?

BTW, my dealer says that options like these aren't fitted at the factory but rather at the dealer's. Is this normal? Seemed rather strange to me, although I've nothing against it, in principle, presuming that they do the job right.

Thanks for any tips.
Eric

all the accessories you mention are dealer (or DIY) fit, the 'running boards' AKA side-steps do stick out but also provide pre-damage indication Rolling Eyes i.e. they get trashed before the body panels do. I have the rock slider bars fitted which 'do what it says on the packet' I have also fitted the side protection strips

there are more pics in my gallery,

coffeecup also has pictures of the sidesteps

10forcash,

Many thanks. The photos in your 'Bits and Pieces' gallery show much better than the LR brochure what the rock sliders really look like.

And now I know what 'running boards' are really called. Yes, I've probably been too long away from the old country Confused
