Running Boards/Side Rails question |
|
the wife just got me a pair of Side Rails for my Disco 4 for xmas.
had them installed and loved the look, but do notice they make the car drive "heavier" am assuming its becasue they act as a kind of "side spoiler"??
not really a question, just wanted to see if i was right from some more knowlegable folk than I.

I have side steps on my D3 - driven it without and with the steps - I couldn't notice any difference.
Perhaps it psychological! Si

ok maybe i am just going mad...!
I would swear that it does feel a bit different to drive, not heavier in the weight sense of the car, but with regards to acceleration. maybe i am ready for the men in white coats

Don't worry, you're not going mad.
It's just aerodynamics coming into force.
It's ideally explained just as in a Formula 1 car.
They have front and rear wings, the idea is that the faster the car travels the air forces down on these wings which pushes the car downwards onto the track thus making them corner much faster, effectively glueing them to the track.
So on a D3 it isn't really that noticeable, but that's what you'll be experiencing and I'm sure you'll find that the faster you go, the more resistance you'll feel, but you'll be able to fly around the bends much quicker now.
You'll see from my sig strip below that I've taken my side bars off and selling them as I'd rather have the speed on the open road rather than in corners.
Hopefully that's put your mind at rest .... now where's my white coat.
ITTP btw I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Ah but did you consider the steps are concave underneath so would give you more lift not downforce. Leave them on and enjoy the improved fuel consumption

Must be ground effect just like on the Porsche 956.
With side steps fitted, you should get at least 6 tons of downforce at speed. Fantastic cornering but it does tend to make the air suspension struggle a bit
