Exactly. But it’s their considered opinion that lets them decided whether or not to buy a D5 or stay with their current car.

Better is relative, granted - but as a package the D5 isnt improved over the D4, especially when looking at the market use for the Discovery as a "brand" and when cost is factored in it absolutely isnt better.

The D5 as a product line, in a very condensed LR line up, is good on many levels (it also has a number of negatives - i would also argue it has lost core features), but its well out of where the disco used to fit in the line up.

I think even when the D5 2 comes, it will make it better but still probably wont address costs etc.

I know im not the only one, the dealers said the same and thats why im going back to d4

The thing is everyone is shouting before they are hurt. Maybe the new Defender will be more the car for the D3/D4 owners?

Well I have braved looking at the D5 again on the assumption that they tidy up the back end eventually. The killer for me was the middle row seats, could not believe how they were on the floor. Jumped in a RRS back seat and they were fine. What have they done with the D5? Volvo here we come.

The D5 may be the black 🐑 of the LR family and I understand that, but I struggled to see the appeal of an XC90 over the D4 when I went to look at one. Is it the XC90 that you’re looking at and what is it that marks it out over, say, a RRS?

I don’t think that the XC90 is better than my D4, however, in two years time when my D4 is on 80k miles it will be sold and at the moment the XC90 is the 7 seater that ticks most boxes...not better than a D4 mind but they seem to have stopped making them!

I'd like to know who LR will be aiming the new Defender at. There's no reason to believe that it will be to disgruntled D4 owners; I suspect that LR aren't that interested in the D4 owners that don't want to move to the D5.

The new Defender is unlikely to be compromised by the need to be seen to be replacing the D4; it's much more likely to attract a new market as a, relatively compact, trendy, city going car to pick up where many of the last Defenders went once the utility people and the military had lost all interest in them.

Think of a bigger, better version of the original 3 door, soft top, Freelander 1, with big tyres and macho accessories, with owners dreaming of putting surf boards and mountain bikes on them - even if it gets no further than the car park of trendy cafes. Once they get older and richer, there'll be expected to move on to the DS and D5 for the extra space.

Australia 2007 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Zermatt SilverDiscovery 3

i have posted my suggestions before on other threads

For the Australian market.

-RRP price Drop, We are not stupid, Brexit depreciated the pound nearly 20%,and then landrover put up local prices nearly 20% ????

-Drop the 2.0lt TD4 engine (the market leader in large 4wd's is Toyota, with a 4.5lt V8 engine as standard) its just a waste of time marketing that engine here. Make the SD4 the entry level engine

-Drop the Discovery badging on the Bonnet, and go back to LAND ROVER decal as per the D3. Think BMW, MERC BENZ, do they have X5 or ML on the bonnet etc?

-7 Seats as standard

-split tail gate

- better interior plastic, looks cheap when compared to other expensive cars.

-Where is the Class leading tech? the invisible bonnet, laser headlights. The D3 was a game changer with terrain response etc. The D5 has no game changing features.

- The C pillar design doesn't work, it is to chunky and doesn't relate to the front or back of the Vehicle.

- Front light cluster looks crap, I am not sure if the lights are to small, or the black horizontal line ruins the look.

and finally the D5 is to late to market, it should of been a 2015 release.

P.S. The amount of local dealer demos available for sale is still growing, and now I'm noticing some reasonable price drops, higher spec demos before Xmas $140k, now down to $120k.

I admit my own element of doubt and skepticism initially ...but all this energy wasted writing endless streams of demands as to what it should or shouldn't be, how it looks or how it shouldn't, is fruitless. It is what it is ....they are not going to substantially change hundreds of millions of pounds worth of investment in design and tooling based upon the witterings found here.

My advice is have a go in one for a couple of days ...experience it..feel it....if you still don't like it then a better use of time is to move on.

Land Rover don't have a major problem at all ...they are clear where it sits in their strategy and they are clear that it's a move away from the traditional tonka D3\4...and the sales figures are pretty healthy considering it's such a 'bad', 'ugly' motor.

Many current D3\4 owners who don't get the strategy change do have the problem ...they see the D5 in isolation of the plan and are uninterested in where it sits in it, because in their minds it had to do the job of a direct replacement. That was never the intention.
