I have a question for those of you with a remap, if you have had a remap does it does it have the same effect when you select sand mode as it does for us without a remap if you get what I mean or does a remap cancel

Tried it yesterday.
According to the 4x4 screen, both diffs were unlocked (but then I don't have a locking rear diff so can't comment on that one).
Use it all the time I need to get away from lights quick, then change it back once I'm in front of all the other traffic Barney

Yes you can.
If you would select something which could damage the car, it will not do as told.

Good question re the remap?
A BAS remap was on my wish list at some point so will a remap just feel like sand mode or better? (depending on which remap of course) And if it is just like sand then perhaps the outlay is not warranted as much?

The sand setting provides for a noticeable change in off the mark acceleration but it's nothing on a proper 3rd party re-map IME 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Can someone explain what would make a D3 accellerate faster in sand mode? It can't change the gearing (except maybe ensure an auto is in 1st) so can it provide more power?
I'll confess I sniggered at the thought of a 2.5+ tonne 4x4 spinning 4 wheels away from the lights...

The D3 (and obviously D4/RRS etc) have a drive-by-wire throttle system. Your right foot simply feeds a value (representing the pedal angle) into the ECM which then, based upon the rate of change of said value, alters the fuelling to allow the engine to increase revs at a certain rate. This rate is kept at a relatively conservative value to make daily driving as smooth as possible whilst smoothing out rapid throttle movements that harm fuel economy and kill baby seals etc
When pulling away from lights, even when doing so in a hurry, not many people would actually bury the accelerator as far as possible and usually only "tickle it" to get the car moving.
By selecting Sand Mode, the throttle mapping is advanced significantly meaning that it allows a much faster increase in revs for a much smaller pedal movement. This means that when you apply gentle throttle you are really getting the effects of applying a good boot-ful of pedal travel.
If you constantly pull away from the lights by burying the pedal into the carpet, then you won't notice too much difference when in Sand Mode, but if you drive like nearly everyone else does, then you'll see a marked difference in acceleration for similarly small pedal movements.

The different terrain respone modes control various functions - suspension settings, HDC selection, gear change points in auto box and throttle position reaction to name a few.
For example in rock crawl the throttle reaction is soft ie to give more control whilst technical off roading - you wouldn't want to nail the throttle by accident clambering over bonnet size boulders. At the opposite end of the scale in soft desert sand you need maximum acceleration so the pedal responce is hard.
Try it for yourself, the effect is noticeable, not as much as a remap, but it still doesn't make the D3 a racer.

How much different is the 'Sand' mode to 'Sport' I wonder? Could you could put it into 'Sport' and 'Sand' at the same time?

Sport mode is usually isolated when special TR modes are selected Jonathan 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Donald, thanks for the detailed explanation, which confirms my understanding of terrain response progs. It seems folk are praising increased response of the car in sand mode rather than increased power, which I can appreciate.
My wife's car has a so-called Sport mode, which reduces steering assistance and alters the throttle map. While the steering is worthwhile for greater feel at speed, I hate the throttle change as its like a switch and difficult to modulate.

Okay, on my car the remap applies across the board, it improves the total driveability - more responce and more torque. Selecting terrain response modes still applies its rules - diffs, gears, throttle etc as it should.
