Why does my Sat Nav not like the A34? |
|
Picked up my new XS on Saturday and drove it down from Edinburgh to Poole in appalling weather. Had a couple of clitches that I'll comment on elsewhere but one thing that bugged me about the Sat Nav was the calculated route. It was spot on until the M40 but insisted the best way to Poole was to continue down the M40 to the M25 and then the M3. Utter nonsense. All previous Sat Nav's have shown the best route i.e. M40 then A34 joining with the M3 at Winchester. Even once I was on the A34 it kept wanting me to backtrack. I cancelled the nav and restarted it and again it insisted on taking me a very bizarre route that would have taken me off the A34 and off towards Salisbury. I ignored it and continued on my normal route. Does LR have something against the A34?

It is probably assuming too slow a speed for the A34 or possibly A-roads in general. Are the assumed speeds configurable? Cheers

Unnecessary quote removed
I don't know if they are configurable but even if they are I'm not sure that is the answer as the ETA was showing 17:10 for the M40/M25/M3 route but when I eventually convinced it I was taking the A34 the ETA dropped to 16:52.

Is it a brand new disc? Newer ones are less fond the M25 and will use the A34. TBH the way I use sat nav is drive the route I want and then look at the sat nav when I'm nearing my destination. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

My Sat Nav takes some weird routes at times. a while back it had a dislike of ring roads and bypassess
Its no worse than the one i had in my Mondeo and E-Class for route planning , but as a whole i prefer the LR SatNav. I dont bother questioning it anymoe - i just follow the green line. which drive MrsDiscoDunc mad Duncan

Do you have dynamic navigation on or off ?
TBH I always use the M40/A34 to go to Salisbury and Southampton. Have to say I only ever seem to actually "use" it for the final leg . . . "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Thats nothing, I recently got off the ferry in Harwich and set a course to Northampton and it was trying to send me via Belgium. On a mission to find the perfect Pork Pie. Just Found it (I think)..(Yes I have)

I use a TomTom and from Wantage, not far off the A34, it can never make its mind up if its better to go to Poole down the A34 or down the A338 through Salisbury, it will select either route depending on the moon, tides, wind direction or some other unknown trigger. having taken both routes the difference in time between them on clear roads is a couple of minutes. During rush hour or a sunny sunday afternoon then the A338 route beats the A34 everytime. I do not have the LR satnav but does it get traffic updates, if so maybe it knew of an incident.

Mine always wants to take me from Glasgow to Dundee via Edinburgh - more motorway miles. You can change the preferences or just not use the sat-nav when you actually know the best way there.....
When you are lost you won't really care which way it takes you!
the other work around is to go 'via' somewhere - just set the A34 as your 'via' setting (waypoint) and it will do what you want it to

I use a Garmin Nuvi in the LR3, and it does some pretty random routing from time to time.
On the last trip out to AZ, it all of a sudden decided to take a different (and faster) route out of town, and then a new (and slower) route back into town coming back!
No new map updates, it does not have any form of live traffic update - so WTF is it doing?

Going across the M62 on New Years Day, I had 46 miles remaining displayed with an ETA 30 minutes ahead of the indicated clock time.
Now I know the roads were faily clear, but thats an average speed to destination of 92 mph by my calculation Don't worry..... it only seems Kinky the first time you do it!

I think the problem with the LR unit is that is does not have a comprehensive database of roads and speed limits. It knows a road as either a motorway, or restricted road.
It probably sees the A34 as a restricted road - which it often is

On my 06 and my 08 when returning to Wareham/Dorchester (now that's proper Dorset, none of this Poole nonsense) the nav always tries to send me to via Salisbury too. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
