Satellite Navigation 'Initialising' ?

Hi
My D4's Satellite Navigation is playing up - just wondered if anyone else had experienced same or found a fix?
When I start up it doesnt' seem to recognise where we are (says unknown road), if I go to set a destination or simply bring up 'on line' it simply says "Naviagtion Intialising Please Wait" - it can stay like this for hours on a journey. I estimate it now does this for 80/90% of the time - the other 10/20% it seems to work normally - weird ?
Today it came up with a new one - drove 12 miles from Daventry to Rugby with it 'not working' - suddenly in Rugby it sprang to life - But - it showed roads in Daventry where we had started, after about 5mins it then realised we were in Rugby and 'updated' (did the same in reverse on journey back).
I have tried disconnecting the battery to see if I could 're boot' it - didn't work
Anyone any ideas ?
It always fails when you really could do with it working
Here is hoping
Thanks
Johnny V

Possibly the GPS antenna has an intermittent connection or it could be the disk drive in the nav unit is getting to end of life and having trouble reading data.

Which nav unit do you have fitted, the early one that requires the maps updated by the dealer or the later one which is updatable via a usb stick?

Hi thanks for coming back - I have to assume its the new one, I believe the upgrade is by a USB stick
I think your idea about intermittant antenna connection sounds plausible !

To confirm if its the later one, there should be two USB sockets on the underside of the cubby box lid, one marked USB and the other marked iPod.

The GPS antenna is in the tailgate behind the high level stop light - which is almost impossible to remove without damage as its glued in place.

Have checked - it is the later one with USB and IPod ports in the underside of the cetre console lid.

If it is the antenna is it possible it could be a break in the wiring ? Am guessing it is one of the mass of wiring in the access 'box' on the N/S in front of the rear light - I am thinking this could be likely as I have stored a torque wrench, spider, and wheel nut socket set in here - maybe bashed something !

Glad you know what you are saying - think my knowledge stopped when we stopped using feeler guages and replacing the points !

Cheers

It is possible that it's a break in the wiring, however virtually all of the infotainment wiring goes down the right side of the vehicle (the route IIRC is from the tailgate, over the right rear wheel arch, under the front right seat and then forwards under the centre console). Apart from the connectors at each end of the cable there is only one other - under the centre console.
The most likely place for a break would be the section of cable from the tailgate to the body.

Thank you for the information - I will see if I can see any issues with the wiring across to the tailgate.
However I suspect this is going to be one of those where you can spend forever with no result !
I was hoping it was going to be a simple 're boot' - someone suggested disconnecting the battery and then touching the two connectors together - sounds strange and I would worry about other damage if their are any capacitors in the system.
Really appreciate your time and assistance !

It's known as a hard reset, quite useful on the D3, I'd be surprised though if it was any help with your fault.

TBH the more I think about it this sounds more like a problem with the navigation unit.

Thanks - I think I was fearing that this was going to be the likely outcome !
Appreciate your interest and advice

If you do decide to try a second-hand unit, there are lots on that auction site. You should not have to pay more than about £130

Search for Jaguar or Land Rover AH22-18C815-Hx

x = any letter from A to P (P was the last version)

When I had problems with my nav unit the original was HJ, replaced it with HP with no issues.
