Yes, that would be funny, but it's to close to the truth. And for me that wasn't in 1957. I had six of the best in the late 70's. Sad

1957: Everyone looked forward to a bright future of social, scientific and technological progress.

2019: Everyone has given up on the future and instead looks back to the past with rose tinted glasses.

Rolling with laughter

You forgot this one:

1957: school bully gets a whopping and probably doesn’t do it again, ever

2019: victim must apologize to the bully and must change school

I was at school late 70s-80s and we would get 6 with a trainer, or slipper, if caught out of bed. Someone did get a running shoe by mistake. Running spikes are short but "effective"! Shocked

To be honest, 6 with a trainer is less of a punishment than a detention or lines. The former is over in seconds and you get on with your day. The latter two take up precious free time after lessons.

When I was a nipper in the 70s I was a fidget in class. Turns out I was reacting to an E number in the orange squash we drank at the time. Parents read about it, changed our squash to avoid the E number. I believe the E number was later banned / removed because it causes such issues. Six of the best wouldn't have helped.

My grandfather was a headmaster (in W Sussex - was it you?) at that time. If one person was given the slipper the whole school behaved perfectly for weeks. He once let off a child who had been sent to his office for the slipper but had stood so perfectly still between two filing cabinets he went un-noticed for about an hour. Firm but fair.
