Scorpions v AT2's - road noise and grip
Hi,
At 25k miles, my original Scorpions are ready for a change.
I see from the forum that AT2's get a good write up.
Don't know anything about them so my questions are for normal road use, (non off road use) how do these compare for noise anf grip.
I tow a 2 tonne caravan with the D3 and although pleased with the Pirelli's, would the AT2's be as good for my use?
Cheers.2015 D4 HSE in Corris Grey

I fitted AT2s late last year. Road noise is very slightly higher than Scorpions but no problem at all. On-road grip is very good. I haven't yet driven them off-road (I swapped to winter tyres shortly after I fitted them) but I expect a great improvement over the Scorpions. Having said that, I was still able to do quite a bit off-road with the Scorpions.
Buy them, I'd say. Also take a look at the tyre wiki; there are other AT tyres available.

Had my AT2's on a while now, would recommend them. Arctic Frost Discovery 3 TDV6 SE, Active Rear Diff, Adaptive Head Lights, Tow Pack, Ebony Leather, Roof Rails, Mantec Guard. Tasmod Stainless Sill plates. Grabber AT's. Home made mud flaps. Side Steps back on until the next time.

What Chesters said! I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

AT2's are very good on dry tarmac. Noise is way in the background (and comforting more than anything else), you do feel the road surface more due to the more aggressive tread, they are bouncier but not overly so, they are not as good in the wet but then there is less rubber on the road and the compound is different.
Off road they appear to be more than adequate for most surfaces and are very good on snow.
Water is less likely to be pushed up onto the windscreen too unless you're hitting a deep puddle. Gets ejected to the side more.
IMHO I would go for them or Wrangler's which I found better all round than the Pirelli tyre.

AT2's
Hello everyone
I have had AT2's on my range rover classic for several years now and they are very good on the road.
I will definetely put them on the D3 when the Wranglers wear out. They are also very good offroad. I spent last Sunday at SLINDON 4x4 (Chichester) in all the mud and goop and the range rover didnt get stuck once. Covered in mud and scratched but not stuck.

Re: AT2's
Thanks so far guys.
Are these AT2's only available from specialist 4x4 outlets or are they obtainable from the likes of Quickfit/National etc?2015 D4 HSE in Corris Grey

I got the ATs for my TD5 disco from the local tyre guy, not klunk fit, but not a 4x4 specailist either.
Was very pleased with them - road manners were very good and quite a bit cheaper as well.
I have a set of (4) almost new (<1000 miles) AT2's on Style 1 18" Alloys for sale now as they won't fit the FFRR.
Brilliant tyre with less road noise than the Scorpions. Excellent on tarmac but never tried off-road. They certainly look like they could do the necessary in the rough stuff. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

My pirellis only lasted 18K. Fitted AT2 s and have now done 30k since Sept last year. I found a slight increase in road noise only on some surfaces and have not noticed any less grip on dry roads. Slightly wet greasy roads seem to have a tad less grip but thats to be expected as previously said there is less surface area of rubber on the road. Have used them in mud and snow and like the fact i know i will be able to get home no matter what weather we have.I do 120 miles a day on very twisty fast B roads and love them. They cost me £100 less a set than the pirellis and are looking like they will last at least 30% longer. My local Kwik Fit wouldnt supply them but found plenty of other locals willing to out bid each other for 4 off. Will definately replace them with same if nothing else comes along to better them.

With 18" wheels the General Grabber AT2 is a great choice and as yet have not had ANY negative feedback and priced well.

My original Scorpion Zeros lasted 30k miles, my second pair only 18k.
I've now switched to the General Grabber AT2's - performance wise they are no different to the Zero's - I don't go mad on roundabouts but the traction control light hasn't come on yet. They might feel a bit squirmier but I not convinced as yet. I went for these to give longer tyre life and I've stopped doing all the motorway miles I did previously - I can now get to some more adventurous places to go mountain biking.

I've got wranglers, Zeros and AT2...
Zeros are OK but I had the feeling they were wearing out too fast and are only applicable to onroad driving. Got some wrangles afterwards but ruined them on one single "light" offroad event... AT2 are OK, but since then I don't believe anymore in the 90% something/10% something else thing... it's more like pregnancy or computer talk... yes or no, black or white, 1 or 0...
I've fitted back some wranglers on the 18" wheels for pure onroad adventures and I've the 17" STT, slightly oversized, for offroad... some may say they won't do good in sand, being too aggresive, but this is not the typical type of soil here in Belgium... A second D3 ! This time with all whistles and bells (Auto, 7seats, Diff Lock, RAI, all kinds of protections, winch, Extended range tank, iPod adapter....)
First time twice the same car ! and first time third car of the same brand !
Are AT2s available to fit the 19" D3 wheel? Or just the 18"?Previously:
