i could order a key with just a reg number if i wanted to but as above, might as well pack your bags if you do if a car was proved to be stolen using this method
all later keys need to be paired but ids etc before they will unimmobilise a car so sleep safe

you'll be surprised though the amount of grief i get from customers who call as have "lost their key"...so use your spare...only had one Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes then they get all arsey with me when i ask them to bring in proof of owner ship and other id details...quite abusive sometimes Yawn Yawn

The clue is in the phrase "chain email" Rolling Eyes

Covering up your vin is a silly idea and makes things a lot easier for crims and scammers. If people get into the habit of covering up the vin it will make it very easy for people to clone/replate cars and not get spotted and increase the likelihood of getting your car nicked. Covering your vin will also mean some difficult questions if you get pulled over by the police, and i could see insurers taking a dim view too.

Theft of cars by noting the vin and buying a new key is not a significant MO for car theft, and unlikely to ever be. After all if you buy a key linked to a vin then it ain't rocket science to find out where it was bought from and find some trace of the villain via cctv etc. There are far easier and quicker ways to nick cars.

So if you only have 1 key and you lose it, how can you 'pair' a new key to the car if you can't get in to start it and bring into the dealer? Testbook on a laptop??

All these keys can coded with a £100 programmer, they have to get into your car, but the programmer simply plugs into your ODD port and then any key can be paired with the car and they can drive off.
Drive to a local place to put a new window in and you are done.

All very easy and all very scary.

By the way, I am not a car thief!!

Took a 2012 HSE out yesterday and trying to decide on it. Hence joining the forum, but we had been discussing these electronic keys on the BMW forum recently.
