Could scum steal your D4 this way ?

Scenario:
Scum sees your D4 on driveway and wants it for himself.
He comes back in the dead of night, shines his torch through the windscreen and obtains your VIN.
He'll have your address [as that's where the D4 is parked] and from that he could easily find out your surname.
Equiped with all that info he goes to a LR dealer, says he's you, lost his key and orders a new one [based on info from VIN].
When 'his' key arrives he pops back to your place in the dead of night, opens your D4, starts it up and drives away!
[would certainly save him the hassle of breaking into your house for the key fob and risking the possibility of a cricket bat around the head or confronted by swmbo in rollers - or even worse .... both !!!]
Evil or Very Mad

Could the above scenario happen ??
[nicking the D4 that is - not the cricket bat or wife in rollers Rolling Eyes ]

I would hope the dealer would ask for proof of ownership, like the V5.
And proof of you, like driver's license.

And we all know that someone selling on dodgy cars would only ever use genuine documents. Ooops thought this was the number-plate thread!

Our local dealer has a big notice behind the parts desk saying keys can only be ordered with multiple forms of ID.

LR and/or the dealer would have their head handed to them on a plate if someone's car got nicked like that.

also presumably a new key has to be paired anyway, which is why it costs so much? So a new key without having the car to pair it to ain't no use to anyone?

Oddly after me thinking of the original scenario, my wife has just received this chain email at work.
I accept the very valid point that the D4 key needs to be paired ....
.... but what about your second set of wheels Confused

VIN NUMBER - WARNING

Here is INFO worth the price of your car....

WHAT WILL the car thieves THINK OF NEXT?
The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or vehicle, write down the VIN # from the label on the dash, go to the local car dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN #.

I didn't believe this e-mail, so I called Chrysler-Dodge and pretended I had lost my keys. They told me to just bring in the VIN #, and they would cut me one on the spot, and I could order the keyless device if I wanted.

The Car Dealer's Parts Department will make a duplicate key from the VIN #, and collect payment from the thief who will return to your car.

He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the vehicle, or draw attention to himself. All he has to do is walk up to your car, insert the key and off he goes to a local chop
shop with your vehicle.

You don't believe it?

It IS that EASY.

To avoid this from happening to you, simply put some dark tape (electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN Number Metal Label located on the dashboard.

By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you CAN cover it so it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief.

I urge you to forward this to your friends before some other car thief steals another car or truck.

I slipped a 3x5 card over my VIN NUMBER. PASS THIS INFORMATION ON TO ALL YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS NOW!!!!!
THEY WILL THANK YOU FOR IT.

I am certain that the vehicle has to be paired with the key. When my key failed, I had to take the car in to the workshop for them to do their stuff.

Yes Gareth it would need paired, so not now an issue with D3 or D4.
But the point is now that of your other set of wheels with a more conventional key system.
[maybe thread should be edited and moved to off topic?]
