SDV6 6 Speed v SDV6 8 Speed

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and contemplating swapping our FL2 for a Disco4. At the moment I'm considering something like an 18 month old SDv6 with the 6 speed box and "proper" auto lever against the 2012 SDv6 with the 8 speed "knob" box. I'd appreciate anyone's comments regarding whether its worth getting the newer car for the 8 speed box. I know the SDv6 is slightly more powerful in the 2012, but I guess you wouldn't notice that. Is the 2012 more economical in the real world?

Thanks,
Chris.

Hi

I've got the new 2012 and had the 2011 before. Although the 2011 is a brilliant car, the later model is smoother, quieter engine, bit quicker and fuel economy is marginally better. It is overall a better car though.

Downside is the slight lag on acceleration from standstill, but once it gets going.... Whistle

The rotary knob is great once you get used to it.

Hope this helps a bit Wink

Paul

Thanks Paul - pretty much sums up what I suspected.

Hi Ferret & welcome.

When i was looking a couple of months back 2012's were carrying a real premium 2nd hand.

I could bet a much better deal on a an older 6 speed as there were more about (and of course they are older).

Having come from a D3 ( i did think about a FL2 for a while too so test drove a couple of those too) the D4 is great car as Paul says so in my view it's just a matter of you deciding in the extra 2 gears & knob are worth the extra !!

There are a few other changes too , like the screen / infotainment software , but I think that is better in the older cars Laughing

Got my last 2 (D3 & D4) from Rocar and always found them polite & happy to do a deal ...unlike some of the other dealers i have tried, who just made me Evil or Very Mad with their attitude.
 Cheers Ian

I agree with Paul, I went from a 2011 D4 into a 2012 D4 and the later model is just so much better, a lot smoother and slightly more economical (although not a lot) I haven't experienced the lag some people have mentioned. After you have driving it for half an hour you will be used to the 'knob' Thumbs Up

I have a D4 on order MY13.... And I would've preferred a gearshifter. But, having driven an 8 speed it's suits the even better than the 6 speeder. And that's hardly bad Thumbs Up

Still wish it had a gear shifter!

I quite like an auto, I just recall driving a D3 some years ago and thinking that you had to put your foot down in anticipation of gaps etc for the gearbox to catch up, I hoped the 8sp had solved this.

The 8 speed box is much better. It locks up much quicker and shifts up quicker as well allowing a small increase in MPG and better driving characteristics if you aren't a thrasher.

Certainly look at getting a remap like a BAS one or Bluefin maybe where you are as they will help with low speed pickup which the SDV6 with the 8speed box needs IMO.

Just remember to change the fluid on the auto box Smile

8 speed is smoother on changes and a much better box than the 6 speed.
The 3.0litre SDV6 engine from 2012 MY (in UK) delivers 255 bhp and a combined fuel consumption on 32.0 mpg.
Having driven both a 2012 witth 8 speed and a 2011 with 6 speed the difference is noticeable and the 8 speed wins in all areas and it didn't take long to get used to the pop up knob and paddle shift.
