I may regret posting this...
Ok, here's the plan, at some time after I get me Disco 3 (September now.... fanx LR)  I'm considering having a second Landy for full - on adventures in the mucky stuff - not that the Disco 3 can't hack it - Mrs. 10 would have my b@lls for earrings  if I got it dented 
Soooo...
Currently torn between two options
Keep the Disco 2 and toughen it up a bit
Get a Defender and do the same
Sounds an easy choice  here's the proviso's
Can't have anything 'high maintenance' (other than Mrs. 10  ) as bits of landy all over the drive would put Mrs 10 in a right snit and don't even mention the garage
It's got to have a minimum of two passenger seats (for the two 5's - Mrs 10 isn't keen on ''all that muckin' about in fields'')
Currently the Defender option looks favourite as the perception is that they are easier / cheaper to fix after close contact although I prefer the disco 2's driving position & comfort
Suggestions??

I suggest you keep the Disco or sell it and buy an older Disco tdi. You get so much more car for your money than with a Defender. Tdi Defenders still get ridiculously high money and many have had such a hard life that they are a long long way past their prime and reliability suffers as a result. They are not safe cars to carry young kids in either.
There are lots of cheap offroad extras that can be added to a disco now and their only disadvantage over a defender is body damage when driving in tight woodland. One other option is to buy an old Range Rover V8. You can pick one of these up for £1,000 and whilst they are thirsty and unreliable, they are brilliant offroad (actually often better than a defender) and brilliant value for money. Ensure you get one with a full MOT though...... Disco 4 TDV6HSE

Smarticus, i'm thinking of keeping the disco 2 (1996 model  ), although there's more than the usual transmision slop, so a diff / gearbox / transfer box rebuild could be on the cards although the engine's sweet....
Had extensive on & off road experience of Disco's, Defenders (long & short) plus Wolf's, WIMIK's and 'pink panthers'
Generally the Disco's perform better than the defender and have also been used to recover Defenders, although the defender drivers were generally "numpty's" that said, I've always felt that the defenders were more substantial and able to take more punishment.... so i'm still not sure

I think the 10 family should go for an old Disco and enjoy. Let the dog have the whole back the kids the second row and Mr & Mrs 10 in the front. Mrs 10 could navigate the way, the 5's could give some friendly advice from behind with the occasional slap on the head for Mr 10 and poor old pooch just keeps nodding happily in the back licking what dogs lick.
In all I think an old Disco would be the dogs b******s

Mrs. 10 seems happy with keeping the disco 2 so that looks like a plan although she wants to know how much you charge for 'storage'

There is nothing wrong with a good old Disco for doing a bit of family off roading. If you want to get serious, then the repairs to body start to be a bit expensive. Go for manual however. There thats serious.
