Seeking Land Rover discovery 4 family car
Good afternoon.
As we have a growing family we are looking to get a disco4 to replace our Audi Q3. Budget is around 13-14k. Question, is it better to get an HSE with higher mikes or an XS with lower miles? Also any obvious things to look for, and would you buy privately or is dealer a must (with warranty)? Doesn’t seem to be much price difference in it. Thanks

Personally I wouldn't worry to much about HSE v XS it is more about the service history and how well the car has been looked after. A full service history is an absolute must, doesn't have to be a main dealer, a good independent is probably better.
It will also be your own preference to what toys you want inside, remembering the more toys = more things to go wrong ie sunroof and sunroof leaks.
Look and drive as many as you can to get a feel for the car and then handover your money and start praying
There are often cars in the For Sale section of this forum which fit within your budget and you know that they will have been looked after and pampered.
If you do a search on here you will find many threads about buying a new car and the things to look out for.

Coming from an Audi, As I did, I think you'll want HSE as a minimum. I thought the XS wasn't quite there for me spec wise.
But as said best way is to take a look and make sure there is a warranty Jaguar I-Pace HSE imminent.
Gone HSE with Flappy Paddles. IID BT tool. RLD Spare Protector, Altox GPS.

Thanks. I test drove an HSE at the weekend, which had useful stuff: reversing camera, sunroof, cool box. Bit of a question mark over when the cam belt was last changed. I’ll have a look in the classifieds section here. If things go wrong can they be fixed by competent diy mechanic or are they body off jobs? I guess brakes are easy to do and suspension but engine bay looks pretty cramped and might be harder?. Cheers

Cam belt should have been done at 7 years or 105,000 miles, which ever is first. If it hasn't been done then that's an expensive job! I would walk away from one if it hasn't been done as that suggests that other essential work/maintenance hasn't been done.Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector

When looking for my D4, I would have preferred a HSE, but an XS came up that fitted everything else I wanted and I don’t really feel as though I have missed out.
It should be noted I have upgraded some bits over the years, which helps, but even so I am very happy with my D4 XS, even allowing for the fact it currently isn’t working properly but then it is a Land Rover!Andy

Hey Goodo, I am in Cheltenham too and just bought and XS as a winter car as my M4 is cr4p in the snow. Happy to look at any close by with you, 4 eyes are better than 2!
I bought privately and touch wood.........

Milesg thanks for the offer, and I may take you up on it. I notice Tim Fry land rovers has a nice black hse with 93k but it’s a little pricey. Maybe wait until the new year and see if it’s still for sale. I hear winter is a good time to buy a used car, but I’m not so sure this applies when discussing discovery’s as they even have a snow setting.
I tell you what the most wonderful thing about the car I test drove was: the suspension is so soft and cosseting and the sheer bulk of the thing was extraordinary. After driving a few Q7’s which also have air suspension, the discovery is set up far more to my liking. Like driving a mini truck.
Fitzy73, how do you upgraded these elements, it is easy to do?
Cheers

I looked at different specs and the HSE compared to the XS wasn’t worth the money so I had the XS but upgraded the seats from manual to electric a must for comfortable long journeys, and I love my D4 but looking at it realistically a GS with heated windscreens and electric seats would have been a better and cheaper choice as the satellite navigation system is a waste of space ,but that’s only my opinion

Goodo, I am way behind many of the people on this great site when it comes to upgrades, so I’m perhaps not the best person to ask.
However, I do have a diagnostic tool, so have activated things like the timer for the fuel burning heater, later added the remote control, activated the 4x4 information screen and changed the halogen headlights to xenons.
Those have been the main things I’ve done (mine is a 2010).Andy

Went to see crip010’s discovery 4 yesterday and subject to a few checks we have agreed a sale. It’s a big step up from our current car, but it has been well loved which is encouraging. The mechanic who fixes it was less than complimentary about Discovery’s in general but then I have always appreciated the brutal honesty of the Poles. Looking forward to ahem discovering more about the new car. Glad I dropped by the forum, and in London too. I think it will make an excellent family car for me the girls and the Labrador. Thanks all for your help
