I am currently deployed in Antarctica on a Royal Navy survey vessel and my wife is at home. She has just sent me this in an email:
Just went to use the discovery as mine needed fuel, however I can't get it off the driveway. The passenger side rear wheel is locked in place, it happened before but I managed to roll the car forward and that released it, this time it has rolled forward but not released. The wheel could not have turned as it has left a mark on the drive way. I am not going to do anything with it as I'm away tomorrow and then it will only sit there again anyway.
Has anyone got any advice that I can pass on, it is not something I have come across before? She has not been driving the car often as she walks to work and the kids get the bus. I am not home for quite sometime yet so am worried about potential damage. She will not want to be jacking the car up or anything too drastic but is pretty switched on with mechanical and electrical things. Failing that she does have AA Home Start! I couldn't search the site to look for similar problems as our interent connection is via a 9.6k satellite connection!
Many thanks. AJ

do you leave the handbrake on - could be sticking epb shoes - see if she can gently rock the car backwards and forwards Duncan

Sounds like the EPB has bouind on to one of teh wheels.
It can be released manually, where the EPB switch is, the blanking plate behind, remove that.
There should be a wire cable in there that will need to brute strength to release (240lbs ISTR) usually best by hooking a large screwdriver through the loop.
Failing that, Low Range 2nd Gear and see what happens..... Should pop off with a loud bang! Bodsys Brake Bible

If it's still under warranty, get LRA to check it out.

If you need to force epb to release I have been told to do it in reverse
As less damage will be caused, how true this is I don't know,
Best of luck

Just rock the car back and forward you may have to use a little force and it will release. I get it quite often, I think it is a common problem with this vehicle. Lord only knows why this should happen this day and age. Then again what was wrong with the good old fashioned handbrake lever. Hey Oh this is progress.

If I need to release it using the emergency cable release are there any actions to take afterwards to reinstate the EPB? I get home on Wednesday so will be giving it a go then. Is the brake shoe in question liable to need replacing or should I be able to get away with it?
Thanks for all the help. AJ

How do you stop the EPB coming on, as soon as I take the key out the hand brake comes on automatically. I did think of removing the fuse for the EPB but that will just log a fault and leave a warning light onall the time !!

To stop the epb coming on, press the foot brake, hold the switch down as you switch off and remove the key.
AJ, when I had LRA come out to mine to release it after it jammed on a steep hill, all I did was operate the epb a few times and it relatched itself. It made a few weird noises in the process, but worked fine after.

As gareth says but I don't believe you need to press the foot brake.
In relation to the emergency release I doubt this will help in this scenario as it seems the shoes are stuck to the drum - not a cable releasing fault from the EPB. Brute force in forward / reverse is the only way as you probably can't remove the drum while the shoes are stuck. How long as it been parked up for?

Thnaks for all the help people. Got home yesterday after a beast of an 18 hour flight, put it in low range reverse and rocked it a couple of times. The car rode up against the seized wheel then a nice big bang and she was away. There seem to be no lasting effects so will put that one down to (your collective) experience!
Thanks again, now onto the borken dishwasher and the dead tv...... AJ
