Service Parts & Auto Transmission Oil Query |
|
Looking to do a full fluid change and service after recently purchasing a D3 HSE from DoggyDog on here.
Whats the general consensus regarding the best Transmission oil to use? it has had a trans flush at circa 120k from memory & currently at 152k. so was just going to do a drain and fill not a full flush.
Is there any issues with mixing the oils as around 50% of the old oil will be left in the box? And is the price difference between OEM ZF fluid 7 either the granville or ravenol justifiable?
Also is there any particular brand of filters that are best to use of is the premium service kit from AF more than adequate?
Thanks in advance
Martin

If it’s had a flush you probably need to get all the old fluid out.
There are guides on here. Basically you run the
Engine for about 20 seconds to empty the TC.
Ravenol oil is popular.
Don’t hear anything about filter variation.
Just a case of if you want plastic or metal. The choice is not obvious.

Search for Filo gearbox oil change, very easy and clean to do.
I used Mannol AG55 I think, but double check first.
Mixing oils is no issue as all, so long as spec is right its er right.

Yeah I've read the filo thread now and definitely seems the best way to do it.
Is it safe enough to start the car and run the transmission until empty? seems a bit dodgy to me?

Quite a few people have done it.
I got nearly 5 litres out the front.
1 Litre out the sump.

I used Mannol AG55 as well
Didn't do the pipe off the cooler jobbie, just drained via the auto box sump, got around 4.5L out. Mannol AG55 was only £42 for 10l barrel so did a double flush
Also swapped to metal sump and replaceable filter, bought them from Advanced Factors

Pete K, when you say the choice between plastic and metal i presume you are talking about the sump and filter?
I was more meaning the engine oil/fuel/air filters etc

Mann+Hummel, Mahle, Meyle, etc. are considered good.. at least in my book. WIX and Filtron are economy brands of M+H.
I’ve got Mann engine air, cabin air and oil filters on mine. The cabin filter is active charcoal + antibacterial. No idea about fuel filters - as petrol doesn’t need it changed regularly - but I’d look at the same brands.
The automatic gearbox pan can be found as a composite (plastic) version or as a metal one. The plastic one(s) have the filter integrated which means changing it needs some acrobatics under the vehicle. The metal ones are aftermarket, from various vendors, and the filter is not integrated. This means that if you used violence (a saw) to get rid of the previous filter the new one can be mounted easier as it’s insert filter, slide in pan. At least here there have been reports of the metal pan being welded badly which has resulted in leaks. All of the leaking pans were made by the same vendor...

Yes I meant the gearbox.
TO refit a plastic gearbox sump, you need to remove a cross member, which doesn't look easy.
For engine oil filter, try and use one with strengthening ribs in the middle.
Mann do this, along with others.
These help to prevent the filter being crushed during fitting

Thanks for the info, as far as i know my D3 already has the metal sump pan as i think it was changed during the mega flush.
I'm offshore at the moment so just trying to gather info before i order parts and oil for carrying out the job once i'm home.

Yes.
Usually if it's had a flush by a "profesional" the sump/filter doesn't get changed.
If its had a DIY flush, its probably been changed
