I have looked at the Merc but it just does not stack up not only that but have seen them struggle to get off a field with small single axle caravan when we have pulled off with a large twin axle and no issues and that was the reason I brought a LR in the first place. cost wise Mercedes are offering a dealer contribution, Mercedes contribution, 4.0% finance and a very attractive trade in on mine. I don't do proper off roading but do need to get things across muddy fields regularly. Was thinking a decent set of tyres and it would fine for it. I'll do some more research after you comments  MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

I would agree a decent set of tyres may well do it. But I was comparing like for like as I had standard road tyres on as well.
On a similar subject also looked at X5 and was put off for same reason. Spoke to a gent in France last year who had just gone from series 5 estate to X5 as he thought it would give him more traction when towing his large caravan but he felt the Series 5 was actually better than the X5 that shocked me and he was certainly not impressed.
