Shell V Power
Hi all,
I think that this belongs here, read on and let me know or move it if not.
On Tuesday I called into the Shell Holywell garage at Chipping Norton. As I pulled in I noticed that diesel was 104.9 a litre. A reasonable amount as I have been paying 107.9 lately.
As I was re fuelling I spotted the price on the pump was 109.9! A staggering amount and although I do not normally take notice of these things I was very cross as you can imagine! Then I spotted it was V Power with all sorts of claims on the advert. A load of old nonsense I thought, just like every other higher priced fuel I have come across.
However! Yesterday with some 60 additional miles since re fuel and having completely forgotten about the fuel I had put in, I set off last evening for a round trip of about 120 miles. Driving steadily I was suddenly aware of what I can only describe as a big improvement in performance. At first I thought it was me, but carried on my way and kept an eye on the performance.
The increase in performance was definitely there and whats more as I pulled away from a junction there did not seem to be a time lag! I have been out again today and can confirm that the time lag is almost negligible. At one point I put it into sport mode and pulled away very quickly.
Finally, I normally get about 21 mpg driving these type of journeys (goes up to 25 - 30 honest!). Well I have 26 mpg at the moment!
I am confident that it is not my imagination and suggest you give it a go.
I too have used V-power diesel and also the BP ultimate stuff.
I found the vehicle to be smoother and more responsive.
I would use it all the time if I knew of anywhere to find it near me!

Yes, a notable lack of SN postcodes! But, then again, the list doesn't mention Chipping Norton so maybe it's old?

Not tried it yet, but certainly the V-power petrol and Optimax before it made a difference, definately smoother running and slightly more responsive.
Just need to check that LR have no issues WRT warranty and BS EN related stuff.The M-Power Express

I've got a Shell card, and when I tried the V-stuff I didn't notice a big difference.
At least no difference to justify the higher price tag!!
But I did also once try the Total Exellium one (when I couldn't find a Shell one around) and that rocks!
Never done that 850kms again...

posted elsewhere about V-Power.
It is a bit smoother, less smoke and a bit more responsive
however managed to post my two lowest ever tank mpg averages on V-Power and as it wasn't due to driving any differently end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

A few days on with a little more mileage under my belt and I am still somewhat staggered by the performance increase.
I drive a few vehicles depending on the mood and state of the weather, so it becomes even more interesting when I get into the D3 and differences become even more noticeable.
I still cannot get over the lack of lag at pull off. This fault has been discussed many times on this forum and I for one was certain it had something to do with the memory ability of the gearbox. However, I am now thinking that it may have more to do with the engine clogging up or some such similar technical problem

Must check this one out. I live near one of the Shell stations; I pulled up to the usual pump only to find it "Not in use". The filler from the pump across the way JUST reached, so I used it, only to find it was V-Power. I had filled an empty tank to the brim - maybe £4 more for the tankful.
I have to say I did not notice any difference, and I am very sensitive to that "lag". I have three locations where I need SAND mode to make an exit from a badly-sighted side-road (and safety here is the main motive for a re-map...)
So next fill will be V-Power. It just takes so long for the tank to empty!! in comparison to the Subaru (Legacy 3.0 Spec B manual 15mpg and a tarmac-only near-permagrin. Oh, and a 55litre tank - 200 mile range ).
D3 + V-Power + TorqTune = Heaven

I have always gone out the way too fill my D3 with BP Ultimate Diesel.
I have noticed over a period of time the difference mpg, at the beginning 25mpg, tho now only 7 miles to work, it shows 28mpg, and on a long trip 30mpg and over if Im gentle.
I am paying 110.0per litre in York, which is steep.

109.9 in Oldham - standard diesel was 94.9 there, 2 weeks ago 2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods

As much as I'd like to say that Torq-Tune in combination with 'premium' fuels will give you an edge, the reality is that the defining factor is the cetane rating of the fuel combined with the amount of carbon build- up in the engine & exhaust system (of course, Torq-Tune will improve the performance and / or fuel economy in any case )
The cetane rating is a measure of the 'ignitability' of the diesel and starts declining from the point the diesel is refined, therefore, older fuel will give poorer mpg and performance than recently delivered fuel. Filling stations with a high turnover will deliver consistently better results than those that only get bulk deliveries once a week for example. Another contributory factor is outside temperature - lower temperatures increase the oxygen density, therefore more oxygen is available per burn cycle. So, fill up at well-used fuel stations, preferably just after a fresh tank has been brought on stream and drive when the air is cold and you'll get better fuel economy - the saving you make over a period of time can be used to pay for a Torq-Tune!
