As a member state (still) the UK has implemented the relevant EU reg and this forms part of vehicle type approval.

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/syst...lights.pdf
This only affects new models made after 2011 or where the manufacturer has fitted them. As 2014MY > has them fitted then they become a mandatory safety feature under the regs ....but I guess turning them off is fine ...just as turning off your airbags would be fine ...if you had a prang.... plod & your insurer though might think otherwise. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I also use my D4 for shooting trips. I find the interior light (speedo etc) VERY bright when driving without light in a dark forest; is there any way to turn of the instruments? SAAB used to have a 'stealth' mode for this...
This is - of course - strictly on private land and not (public) roads.

I read it that the law states they have to be fitted, nothing to say they have to be lit.
Similar to the old Seat Belt fitment, they had to be fitted, it was years later that it became compulsory to use the,.

They have to be lit because the the main principle of the regulation says that they must come on when drive is engaged or until other lights on the vehicle are turned on. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Will have to agree to disagree on this, the design is they come on when the engine is running (LR ones come on when D is selected) legal requirement is they are fitted.
Wouldn't have thought LR would have such a simple way of turning them off it was a legal requirement to use them.
Also, we have a new factory order Renault van on order, will be here for December, still no DRL's on it.

Makes no odds to me what you agree or disagree on
LR states that "Unless required or prohibited by law, the Daytime running lamps can be disabled or enabled"
Also if the model of commercial vehicle predates August 2012 then they only become part of the regs if the manufacturer subsequently fits them at build. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I have a permission at a local golf course for a bit of rabbiting and use my D4 to go anywhere on the site except the greens. I have been there in all kinds of weather as the rabbits don't mind getting wet and completely ruin the 14th. I have never caused any damage to the site with my 2.6 tonne car so the owner bought one too.
I use the drivers side mirror with my old motorcycling snood pulled over it to rest my gun on (Weihrauch HW100 Air rifle) which protects the mirror. I reckon to have cleared about 300 rabbits in the last 3 years. All of them eaten by the owner, myself and friends (except the sick ones of which there are very few). The site adjoins a forestry area and is swamped by the little furry fellas. The D3/4 is an excellent car to hunt from. I made a couple of cardboard panels to cover the clocks and turn the screen off. My 12my doesn't have drl's. FFRR 2017 4.4SDV8 Autobiography. Cost so much I must be mad!
D4 HSE 2012 Like a second wife, more expensive but goes better! I almost cried this time!
D3 HSE 2006 (Almost 8 years together, true love)
Land Cruiser VX 1994 11 years together, wife cried when I p/ex'd for my D3

Not sure if the DRLs would throw up faults in the same way headlamps would but, on my mates defender, we have interrupted the supply to his DRLs with a switch so we can isolate them for this reason

DLR discussion aside Id like to offer some advice from my own experiences Lamping from my D4..
you may, as I did fold in the wing mirrors to prevent glare back from the lamp, however whilst shooting out the passenger side window I didnt allow for enough muzzle clearance ( tanks to a large mod ) and proceeded to pump 75gn of Hornadays finest Amax through my ( as ive found out this morning sodding expensive ) NS wing mirror.

a few years ago my mate leapt out of the driving seat of our defender out in Africa, fired a shot that went through the bonnet and ricocheted off the block. I feel your pain... But still laugh!

easily done. i had a mate who shot through the A pillar of a shogun. same problem as yours, shooting a large mod off the bonnet and not leaving enough clearance.

Can I put my tuppence worth in about DRL,s.
Good idea, but I think they should also have the rear lights on. You can see a car coming up from behind and when it passes you it becomes invisible, especially with the dark nights coming in. I don,t understand people who will not put their lights on in poor visibility.
Just my "bee in the bonnet" thing.
Cheers
