Have just been to local LR dealer who quoted me £600+ to supply and fit side steps!
When I had been resucitated I was told it was not possible to fit them ourselves because we have to drill the trim and it was all much too tricky. The vehicle had them on originally when the sales director had it but it was bought as an ex demo with them removed. Still has mudflap set. Cannot see previous holes but can see about six small round bungs in the underside of the trim. Vehicle is 54 model. HOW CAN WE FIT THEM - IT CANNOT BE THAT DIFFICULT?!! and wheres the best place to get genuine LR ones.

Search on here, you'll find a number of threads WITH pictures too
Its dead straight forwards - you will have to drill/cut the trim but its not an issueSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

He's having you on .
Marks/lines for the cutouts are on the reverse of the trim, drill them out and trim.Theyre hidden eventually by the sateps anyway.
Trim is removed by removing the lugs you spoke about.
You could spend a few weeks on ebay finding a cheap set or you could go to the partsmeister Nick Lee at Yeovil LandRover.See the parts and accessories stickythread on the For Sale & Wanted section.
They're not all that hard to fit , easy in fact.

Discowex is right.
It's dead straight forward. If I could do it anyone could.
The most difficult bit is removing the screws in the rear wheel arch. You'll need a short screw driver otherwise the wheels need to come off.
The holes are already marked on the inside of the trim that comes off really easily.
I think I payed £295 incl. delivery from a LR dealer who sells on ebay, but Nick's the top man for all parts.
The instructions can be downloaded from the Land Rover web site and if you get a new set from Nick there will be a set in the box.
I reckon I spent about 3 hrs doing them, the majority of that time cutting out the 3 holes on each trim for the fitting brackets.
