Single turbo only

Why would a car of this capability be restricted to a single turbo in the V 6 version?

Because it doesn't need a twin turbo

with this logic, the D5 also doesn't need 6 cylinders, whereas the D4 needed 6 pots and 2 turbos. Is LR becoming minimalist due to taxes?

I believe the D4 only used the 2nd turbo at high revs.

It's worked in the Range Rover for a few years. The D5 needs 6 cylinders, the 4 cylinder diesel isn't that great.

2nd Turbo kicks in at c.2500 RPM I believe, which equates to a cruising speed that's illegal in the UK, - but gives a nice kick (and not so nice puff of smoke) on acceleration

D5 gives better kick with just the one turbo, go drive one and you will see what I mean and yes the 4 pot is a waste of time in my view

It does create a hole in the power output beneath around 1400 rpm that isn't there on the twin turbo version. Oddly, it's the same on the FFRR and the RRS too.

They do have a significantly lower CO2 output than the twin turbo in the official test and wonder if this might be the reasoning behind it?

Can't say I've noticed much differences in performance between the TD6 and the SDV6. I would say there is some hesitation when pulling away but I have experienced this in the D4.

Would've liked the SDV8 as there is plenty of room under the bonnet but no doubt would've pushed the price through the roof.

Do you notice the gearbox taking an additional down-change when pulling out of junctions from a slow rolling start?

When I tried the V8 I was amazed to find that it was revving at between 1300 and 1400rpm at 70mph, with instant pick up too. Great stuff! Twisted Evil

I'm guessing that as technology moves on, that they've produced a turbo with more of a variable range, or the cc's are smaller, so hence only one fitted. I always thought that the D4 3ltr had 2 turbos that were sequential, so as to reduce the lag. Thumbs Up

Don't forget we did a side by side drag race between a 4 and a 5, and they were remarkably similar.

D5 has less weight to shift, so can perform the same with one turbo, therefore reducing emmisions.

Although a drag race will tell us about outright power (big turbo), it tells us nothing about bottom end flexibility (small turbo).

However, limit performance potential at the point at which emissions are tested (mostly low revs on a big diesel) and the CO2 figures are likely to be flattering. Makes a lot of sense to do it that way Thumbs Up

On the odd occasion, sometimes she don't want to be rushed.

Though I did beat an X5 3.0D in a drag race coming off a roundabout and up the dual carriageway. It was close but I took the win, I see him looking but not looking if you know what I mean, so that was it game on. Childish but put a smile on my face.
