Slow speed manoeuvre

Hi new to forum and land covering. My new to me GS 59000 miles is difficult to manoeuvre at very low speeds for example when I drive on and off our small parking space. When I press gas pedal nothing happens, a little more gas and the car may shoot forward and I have to jump on the brakes. I am unable to maintain low revs, the problem is difficult to explain, it makes me look like a novice driver in a manual car, where ours is an automatic.

Can you fill in your Land Rover profile to help with diagnosis , its found in your user profile. You are not holding it on the foot brake and pressing the throttle at the same time are you, as it can confuse the electronics.

I think this is commonplace with D4s, particularly when in reverse gear.

I have experienced this in my D4, and when driving a demonstrator. The salesman said it was a safety feature which I questioned.

In the end I've got used to it, but it would be nice to have proper throttle response at low speeds.

I've not driven an automatic D4 (or D3 for that matter), but I can say the throttle mapping in the manual D3 is also not very good. It takes some time to get use to the very damped response from the throttle pedal, and the occasional hold throttle open, even when my foot is off!

I have driven many other cars with 'fly by wire' throttles (as most do now) and the Disco has one of the poorer maps.
Some Fords have odd throttle issues, but my old VW Passat is fantastic. The mapping is superb, and always feels right.

I would check that you don't have a sticking caliper or a binding EPB.. those would cause this..

You could jack each wheel up and spin to make sure it's free (forwards and backwards) and maybe follow Bodsys Bible to adjust your EPB..

surely though if the brakes/EPG were sticking the revs would increase before the sticking component released ?

i have the same initial hesitation issue but brakes and EPB are all ok, but for a supreme off roader that needs low revs control its not helpful.

FL2 from 2011 suffer from similar hesitation issues, and owners on Freel2.com have had throttle bodies, EGR, software flashes and all sorts changed/cleaned/blanked with no change. LR even acknowledge there is an issue but cant fix it, it just seems random to individual cars.

I don't experience any of this. It crawls slowly when in gear, and it's easy to adjust the speed with the throttle when in tight spaces.

The brake is all that's usually required when manoeuvring.

yeah I missed that the throttle wasn't responding..

How about the brake switch? if its seeing the brake is depressed then it will stop you revving too much? then maybe its seeing the brake released then giving throttle control?

It's all too easy to catch the brake pedal when subtly pressing the accelerator. as mentioned above, the car has a "safety feature" that the slightest pressure on the brakes kills the revs ... and as you press on the accelerator further down, your shoe no longer touches the brake pedal and you shoot forwards/backwards.

The amount this is evident seems to vary from car to car. There's even a guy on YouTube showing how to trim down the brake pedal to avoid the issue.

But a faulty brake switch be causing the issue surely?

Wasn’t the characteristics the OP is experiencing a regular complaint back with the early D4’s?

same as with the early SD4 Freelanders from 2011. Hesitation then sudden power surge

LR seemed to cure it with the 2013 update but ive never seen what they did.

@menace ... you could rub some chalk on the edge of the brake pedal and see if it gets transferred to your shoe.

would give you an idea if my suggestion is right.

I get something similar when I try and reverse slowly on full lock. It feels like my old Suzuki when I had it in 4wd on solid ground. The wheels were trying to turn at the same rate which would lock things up until a little throttle would overcome the additional friction or I straightened the wheels.
